Tuesday Tour: Ardent Spirits-The Shakers and Alcohol
October 20, 2020
$12
1:00 pm
In the early 1780s, Ann Lee and the early Shakers were accused by outsiders of imbibing too much. In 1810, the Shakers of the New Hampshire Bishopric were manufacturing hard cider for both their own consumption and sale to commercial markets in Boston. Less than twenty years later, the Shakers had a public funeral for “demon alcohol.” Why did their beliefs change? How did these changes reflect wider trends in American life? Join Education Coordinator Kyle Sandler for a special talk that will answer these questions and more.
Due to social distancing requirements, this tour is open to limited number of participants by advance registration only.
