Freewill offering to benefit the Center for Advanced Musical Studies scholarship fund. Invite your family and friends to join you for these stimulating concerts. \nTuesday\, June 17 – 8:00 pm (Pre-concert talk 7:30 pm)\nProgram presented by internationally acclaimed faculty members – \nTrumpeters Ole Edvard Antonsen\, Gabriele Cassone\, and Clement Saunier\, with pianist Rebecca Wilt\nSaturday\, June 21 – 8:00 pm (Pre-concert talk 7:30 pm)\nTrumpet Calls – Members of the 19th annual Chosen Vale International Trumpet Seminar\nFriday\, June 27 – 8:00 pm (Pre-concert talk 7:30 pm)\nEveryone Loves Difficult Music – Members of the 19th annual Chosen Vale International\nSaturday\, June 28 – 4:00 pm (Pre-concert talk 3:30 pm)\nFinal concert by participants and faculty from around the globe. \nWant to know more about Edward Carroll?\nA native of Chicago and graduate of Juilliard (BM\, MM)\, Edward Carroll is a trumpeter\, conductor\, and teacher of international stature. He serves as Professor of Trumpet and Coordinator of Brass Studies at the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts)\, Professor at the Bard Conservatory of Music\, and as a Senior Lecturer at Dartmouth College. Previous appointments include Associate Professor at McGill University’s Schulich School of Music in 2007-2011 (assuming the role of brass area chair in 2009)\, the International Chair of Brass Studies at London’s Royal Academy of Music and Professor of Trumpet at the Rotterdam (NL) Conservatory. Edward Carroll is the Director of the Center for Advanced Musical Studies at Chosen Vale\, and was responsible for the music programming of the California State Summer School of the Arts from 2006-2008. He also chaired the commissioning committee of the International Trumpet Guild (ITG) from 2005-2011. \nMr. Carroll has served as Principal Trumpet of the Rotterdam Philharmonic (James Conlon\, Jeffrey Tate\, and Valery Gergiev\, Music Directors)\, the San Diego Symphony (David Atherton)\, and as Associate Principal Trumpet of the Houston Symphony (Lawrence Foster)\, touring most of the world’s major concert halls and festivals\, and recording for Sony\, EMI\, Virgin\, and Erato. A frequent guest with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center\, Edward Carroll directed\, recorded\, and toured with the New York Trumpet Ensemble from 1979 to 1988. He has performed with the London Sinfonietta\, Speculum Musicae\, Music Today\, I Musici di Montreal\, Orpheus\, the Bach Aria Group\, the Handel and Haydn Society (Boston)\, and as soloist with many North American and European orchestras. Sir Harrison Birtwistle\, Larry Polansky\, Anne LeBaron\, Bruce Adolphe\, and Pulitzer Prize winner Paul Moravec are among the many composers that have written new music for him\, and his many solo recordings can be found on the Sony\, Vox\, MHS\, and Newport Classic labels.

Everyone is welcome to gather on this day at Enfield Shaker Museum to knit\, crochet\, and weave. All fiber arts welcome! \nThis event is FREE! Bring your project\, your yarn\, your needles\, and a chair\, blanket\, and lunch or snacks. We’ll provide: \n\ntents–but you may wish to bring your own!\nwater\, iced tea or lemonade\, and cookies!\nhourly door prizes!\nlessons for those who want to learn how to knit or crochet!\nstash renewal through a yarn swap!\n\nWe will be knitting washcloths for a community in the Upper Valley who is in need. We’ll provide the cotton yarn and a dishcloth pattern for you to knit. Please bring size 7 or 8 knitting needles! We will have some to loan\, but encourage you to bring your own. DESCRIPTION:Breakfast of Champions Revival\nBenefit Concert\nMay 1st\, 2025\n6:00 – 9:00 pm\nChosen Vale Performance Center \n410 NH Route 4A \nEnfield\, NH 03748 \nJoin us for a benefit concert for Enfield Shaker Museum by Breakfast of Champions Revival! Jay Boucher\, Gary ‘Hub’ Hubbard and friends will be playing what they call Bluegrass Renegade. The original band-mates Jay and ‘Hub’ have been playing together for 48 years. They are offering this concert in honor of their first meeting. Jay wrote the story of their journey down and will share many anecdotes during their performance on the 1st of May. \nThe Story of Breakfast of Champions: \nMay 1\, 1977\, is where this journey started. Mutual friends were hosting a jam session ‘May Day’ party at their house in Enfield Center. So\, my best friend Robby and I headed there with our banjo and guitar to join in. Robby and I had lived together in several places\, and at one point we both made a commitment to each other that I would learn the guitar and he would learn the banjo. So\, we both took some lessons and just started playing\, and playing\, and playing until our fingers bled. We couldn’t get enough of it\, and we were anxious to show our friends some of the tunes we had learned. \nThere were several musicians playing music that day\, but for some reason\, we just seemed to click with two guys name Gary ‘Hub’ Hubbard and Matt Rogers\, who were also good friends who had been playing music together. We had a blast playing at that party with them\, and we left the party with the intention of getting the four of us together to work out some tunes- which we did. \n \nThen there was this Choctaw Festival on the common in Lyme\, NH and we were invited to play a few tunes\, which we gladly did. A guy who was in the crowd for this figured out a way to get in touch with Hub and asked if we would play for a couple hours for a party he was throwing for a bunch of Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital folks at his house on the river in Lyme. \nThis was the launch of what became the Breakfast of Champions\, and for the next five years we tore it up all over the Upper Valley (and beyond)\, bringing in huge crowds and having a ball in the process. We’d also go to bluegrass festivals and compete in the parking lot picking contests and always did very well with those. \n \nWe always practiced at my place on Thursday nights\, as we figured we could always stumble through Friday and then we were onto the weekend. These Thursday night picking sessions became iconic\, and despite a few breaks over the decades while we were all raising kids\, starting businesses\, etc.\, these Thursday night picking sessions are still going stronger than ever! When I reflect on the cast of characters that have been a part of these picking sessions over the last 48 years\, it truly warms my heart\, and really proves that there is power in music that is shared by so many people. The friends we have made and maintained over this span of 48 years is incredible to say the least. \n \n \n \nSo\, on May 1\, 2025\, 48 years to the day when Hub and I first met and played music together\, we want to share some stories\, lots of laughs and of course the music we have been playing all this time. Although the numbers of pickers that have joined in on our Thursday night picking sessions are substantial\, on this night we’ll be introducing you to the core guys\, since we can only put so many people on the stage at one time. These guys all come with their own story\, and I look forward to sharing these stories with everyone. These guys also come with their own unique talents as well\, which will be on display that evening. Most importantly\, these guys are simply the best! We have more fun sitting around the table at my house on Thursday nights\, playing music for six hours or so\, giving each other a hard time and laughing our tails off. We plan on doing a lot of that on May 1st\, so bring your sense of humor with you. \nI’m a huge ‘fate’ guy\, as I have always believed that things happen for a reason. One night shortly after New Years day\, I had this vivid dream that started on May 1st\, 1977\, at the picking session where Hub and I first played music together. The dream carried on through the years\, reliving all the highlights of our musical journey and friendship\, and it ended on May 1\, 2025- at the Chosen Vale Performance Center (of all places)\, with me and my buddies putting on a show to raise money for the Enfield Shake Museum and their new performance center. This is a great venue\, and hopefully this event will expose this place to a lot of musicians throughout the upper valley as a perfect spot for performances of all kinds. The place seats around 300 people\, which fills a big void for venues of this size in the area. \nHaving been involved in the development of the Shaker Village properties since the mid-80’s when the developers purchased the property from the Catholic church\, I find it easy to take this place for granted. However\, this village is a tremendous asset to this area\, and the folks behind the Enfield Shaker Museum have poured their hearts and souls into making this place what it is today. Their recent purchase of the LaSalette property significantly enhances their offerings\, and this new performance center is destined for great things. \nPlease come and join us for this event and help us raise money for a great cause and have a fun time in the process. We are donating our time that night to the Museum and hope that you’ll be in a generous mood that night. This New Hampshire Humanities talk features a hunting club in central New Hampshire and the long history of its inhabitants. \nIn the late 1800s\, the banking\, railroad\, and real estate mogul Austin Corbin returned to his hometown in Newport\, New Hampshire. He built a grand estate and bought out his neighbors’ farms to create an 22\,000 acre wildlife game preserve stocked with boar\, bison\, bighorn sheep\, antelope\, elk\, Chinese pheasant\, and other imported animals. The grounds eventually became a prestigious private hunting park and hosted illustrious guests including Theodore Roosevelt\, the Prince of Wales\, Cornelius Vanderbilt\, Joe Dimaggio\, Rudyard Kipling\, and Augustus Saint Gaudens. This illustrated slideshow features archival images and a discussion of the complicated history and legacy of New Hampshire’s own American Gilded Age robber baron. The talk will also highlight the important legacy of the role the Corbin family and park naturalist Ernest Baynes played in the saving of the American bison from extinction. \nWho is Mary Kroenenwetter? \nMary Kronenwetter holds a doctorate in educational research\, policy\, and administration and has held academic administration and teaching positions at colleges in the United States\, China\, and Japan. Upon returning to New England\, she has worked at historical sites including Historic Deerfield\, Enfield Shaker Museum\, and The John Hay Estate at The Fells. Mary currently teaches for OSHER at Dartmouth and Adventures in Learning at Colby-Sawyer and has recently published the New Hampshire-based historical fiction\, Pauper Auction. \nThis program is made possible by New Hampshire Humanities. Rebecca Rule has made it her mission over the last 20 years to collect stories of New Hampshire\, especially those that reflect what’s special about this rocky old place. She’ll tell some of those stories – her favorites are the funny ones – and invite audience members to contribute a few stories of their own. \nWho is Rebecca Rule? \nRebecca Rule hosts Our Hometown on NHPBS. Each program features a different New Hampshire town\, its stories about what makes their town special told by its citizens. \nShe’s been telling stories in New England\, especially New Hampshire\, for many years. She hasn’t visited every town in the Granite State\, but has found her way to most of them — speaking at libraries\, schools\, historical societies\, church groups\, and charitable organizations. She likes collecting stories because “they’re free and you don’t have to dust them.” Our stories are our identity. DESCRIPTION:Becoming Wolf Talk\nwith Chris Schadler\n2:00 – 4:00 PM\nFree Admission\nAn eastern coyote is defined as much by its western coyote ancestry as by the DNA contribution from the Eastern wolf. Coyotes in the northeast vary physically and behaviorally from its smaller western relative – while still carrying their incredible adaptability. This program delves into the ecology and behavior of this creature\, its indefatigability and how it is the human who must adapt to live with the coyote. \nOn the horizon\, however\, is a native carnivore which fled the northeast during wolf removal and now may be trying to return: The eastern wolf. A look-alike to the coyote\, it has been killed mistakenly for its similarity of appearance to the coyote. We’ll talk about how the wolf and coyote might negotiate a truce in the northeast and how we might do the same. \n  \nMore About Chris Schadler: \nChris earned a Masters in Conservation Biology at Antioch University Graduate School. Her thesis focused on the natural recovery of the Eastern Timber Wolf in Michigan. \nWhile wolf recovery was the focus of her early work\, Chris’ attention shifted to the eastern coyote when she moved to New England in the 1980s. She chose a farm beset with coyote problems to raise sheep and train her border collies. Using sound livestock management and common sense\, she [and her sheep] avoided any predation. \nBeginning in the early 1990s\, Chris taught in the Dept of Natural Resources at the University of New Hampshire and instructed and mentored adult degree candidates in the UNH System at Granite State College. \nChris recently co-founded the NH Wildlife Coalition\, is the NH and VT Representative for Project Coyote and Chairs the Webster Conservation Commission. She continues to research coyote feeding patterns in Coos County and enjoys life without sheep. \nThis event is brought to you by the collaborative efforts of Enfield Shaker Museum and Enfield Public Library. \nComing from a distance? Their leader\, Mother Ann Lee\, preached a radical new religion\, derisively called “Shakerism.” Over the next 20 years converts to this new faith stablished 19 Shaker communities in the East and Midwest\, including two vibrant Shaker villages at Canterbury and Enfield\, New Hampshire. Known for their simple yet elegant style of living\, the Shakers also made racial and gender equality\, stewardship of resources\, honesty in business\, celibacy\, and pacifism hallmarks of their communal life. \n“No Foolish Play”: Celebrating New Hampshire’s Shakers commemorates the 250th anniversary of the Shakers’ arrival in America and explores the sect’s legacy with a talk by Shaker scholar and musician Mary Ann Haagen\, with a performance of Shaker music by the Canterbury Singers under the direction of Kathryn Lundahl. Admission is free. No registration required. DESCRIPTION:Bell-Raising Community Event\nTuesday\, November 28\, 2023\nAbout 10:00 am (Weather Permitting)\nWhen the Great Stone Dwelling was built in 1837 a large bell was put in the belfry to call the Shakers to meals and other community wide activities. The first bell cracked and was replaced in 1848 by the bell that lives in the belfry today. \nThe belfry and the bell it housed were an audible and visible presence for miles around for the next 175 years\, but it’s exposed position and the New Hampshire weather took its toll.  In the spring of 2023 it was determined that the posts supporting the roof of the belfry had deteriorated to the point that replacement was the only alternative. Following several months of preparation\, July 17 the day we had all been waiting for – crane day arrived.  Working from a 125 foot man lift\, the belfry was rigged for a 140 foot crane to lift it straight off the building.  It was placed on scaffolding on the ground\, the bell lifted off and stored away for the summer. \nOn Tuesday\, November\, 28th (weather permitting) the crane will be back at Enfield Shaker Museum to raise the bell and belfry to the rooftop. \nIn the spirit of barn raisings (the visually exciting highlight of barn building)\, you are invited to attend a Bell-Raising Community Event. Historically\, the expectation arose that the community would create a festive family atmosphere around the laborious activity a barn raising required. Today with the help of cranes and modern hydraulic equipment the laborious part is significantly reduced but the potential for a festive community event still exists!\nThe crane will arrive about 8:30 am. At about 10:00 am the bell will be raised to the deck of the bell tower\, followed by the belfry itself. \nThere is plenty of free parking (behind the Great Stone Dwelling) and we will have some chairs set-up in the side yard should you want to sit.  Should the weather not cooperate we will post changes in the schedule on Facebook and in this listing on the website. \nCome and bring your camera (phone) for some great photo opportunities. \n
