Made possible by a grant from the New Hampshire Humanities Council. This program is free and open to the public and will include some light refreshments of coffee or tea and small treats. The program will beheld in the Meeting Room of the Great Stone Dwelling. \nStories speak to us of community. They hold our history and reflect our identity. Rebecca Rule has made it her mission over the last 20 years to collect stories of New Hampshire\, especially those that reflect what’s special about this rocky old place. She’ll tell some of those stories – her favorites are the funny ones – and invite audience members to contribute a few stories of their own. \nWho is Rebecca Rule? \nRebecca Rule hosts Our Hometown on NHPBS. Each program features a different New Hampshire town\, its stories about what makes their town special told by its citizens. \nShe’s been telling stories in New England\, especially New Hampshire\, for many years. She hasn’t visited every town in the Granite State\, but has found her way to most of them — speaking at libraries\, schools\, historical societies\, church groups\, and charitable organizations. She likes collecting stories because “they’re free and you don’t have to dust them.” Our stories are our identity. They hold our history\, our culture\, our heart. \nHer books include N is for New Hampshire\, an ABC book with photographs by Scott Snyder; The Iciest Diciest Scariest Sled Ride Ever!\, a picture book illustrated by Jennifer Thermes; Headin’ for the Rhubarb\, A NH Dictionary (well\, kinda); and That Reminds Me of a Funny Story. SUMMARY:Becoming Wolf Talk with Chris Schadler
DESCRIPTION:Becoming Wolf Talk\nwith Chris Schadler\n2:00 – 4:00 PM\nFree Admission\nAn eastern coyote is defined as much by its western coyote ancestry as by the DNA contribution from the Eastern wolf. Coyotes in the northeast vary physically and behaviorally from its smaller western relative – while still carrying their incredible adaptability. This program delves into the ecology and behavior of this creature\, its indefatigability and how it is the human who must adapt to live with the coyote. \nOn the horizon\, however\, is a native carnivore which fled the northeast during wolf removal and now may be trying to return: The eastern wolf. A look-alike to the coyote\, it has been killed mistakenly for its similarity of appearance to the coyote. We’ll talk about how the wolf and coyote might negotiate a truce in the northeast and how we might do the same. \n  \nMore About Chris Schadler: \nChris earned a Masters in Conservation Biology at Antioch University Graduate School. Her thesis focused on the natural recovery of the Eastern Timber Wolf in Michigan. \nWhile wolf recovery was the focus of her early work\, Chris’ attention shifted to the eastern coyote when she moved to New England in the 1980s. She chose a farm beset with coyote problems to raise sheep and train her border collies. Using sound livestock management and common sense\, she [and her sheep] avoided any predation. \nBeginning in the early 1990s\, Chris taught in the Dept of Natural Resources at the University of New Hampshire and instructed and mentored adult degree candidates in the UNH System at Granite State College. \nChris recently co-founded the NH Wildlife Coalition\, is the NH and VT Representative for Project Coyote and Chairs the Webster Conservation Commission. She continues to research coyote feeding patterns in Coos County and enjoys life without sheep. \nThis event is brought to you by the collaborative efforts of Enfield Shaker Museum and Enfield Public Library. \nComing from a distance? We will provide instructions and all supplies for you to hand roll a set of colorful candles to light for your special holiday festivities. \nFragrant Sachets\nFill beautiful\, reusable\, drawstring organza sachet bags\, with dried herbs from our garden\, balsam needles from the forest and kitchen spices to create a handcrafted set of three fragrant aromas to enjoy this holiday season. \nAfternoon Activities (8-12 year old) include:\nCandle Making\n\nHandcraft your own beeswax sheet candles. Susan Quinlan: \nSusan is a retired registered nurse who has been creating and caring for gardens and people for fifty years. As a self taught and dedicated organic gardener\, she is a recent graduate of the NH Master Gardeners program and holds a Native Plants for the Pollinators Certificate. Susan manages the 7000 square foot Herb Garden at the Enfield Shaker Museum\, where she teaches hands-on herb gardening and herbal crafting. Known for their simple yet elegant style of living\, the Shakers also made racial and gender equality\, stewardship of resources\, honesty in business\, celibacy\, and pacifism hallmarks of their communal life. \n“No Foolish Play”: Celebrating New Hampshire’s Shakers commemorates the 250th anniversary of the Shakers’ arrival in America and explores the sect’s legacy with a talk by Shaker scholar and musician Mary Ann Haagen\, with a performance of Shaker music by the Canterbury Singers under the direction of Kathryn Lundahl. SUMMARY:Bell-Raising Community Event
DESCRIPTION:Bell-Raising Community Event\nTuesday\, November 28\, 2023\nAbout 10:00 am (Weather Permitting)\nWhen the Great Stone Dwelling was built in 1837 a large bell was put in the belfry to call the Shakers to meals and other community wide activities. The first bell cracked and was replaced in 1848 by the bell that lives in the belfry today. \nThe belfry and the bell it housed were an audible and visible presence for miles around for the next 175 years\, but it’s exposed position and the New Hampshire weather took its toll.  In the spring of 2023 it was determined that the posts supporting the roof of the belfry had deteriorated to the point that replacement was the only alternative. Following several months of preparation\, July 17 the day we had all been waiting for – crane day arrived.  Working from a 125 foot man lift\, the belfry was rigged for a 140 foot crane to lift it straight off the building.  It was placed on scaffolding on the ground\, the bell lifted off and stored away for the summer. \nOn Tuesday\, November\, 28th (weather permitting) the crane will be back at Enfield Shaker Museum to raise the bell and belfry to the rooftop. \nIn the spirit of barn raisings (the visually exciting highlight of barn building)\, you are invited to attend a Bell-Raising Community Event. Historically\, the expectation arose that the community would create a festive family atmosphere around the laborious activity a barn raising required. Today with the help of cranes and modern hydraulic equipment the laborious part is significantly reduced but the potential for a festive community event still exists!\nThe crane will arrive about 8:30 am. At about 10:00 am the bell will be raised to the deck of the bell tower\, followed by the belfry itself. \nThere is plenty of free parking (behind the Great Stone Dwelling) and we will have some chairs set-up in the side yard should you want to sit.  Should the weather not cooperate we will post changes in the schedule on Facebook and in this listing on the website. \nCome and bring your camera (phone) for some great photo opportunities. \n

Kirtley\, Montgomery-Garvan Curator of American Decorative Arts\, Philadelphia Museum of Art\, “Presenting American Art Anew at the Philadelphia Museum of Art”.\nIn May 2021\, the Philadelphia Museum of Art opened nearly 90\,000 square feet of additional gallery spaces— the culmination of two decades of planning\, design\, and construction. As the first expansion and reinstallation since 1976\, this so-called “Core Project” was completed in 2021 after four years of construction\, and the newly reimagined spaces are the result of the renovation\, reorganization\, and interior expansion of the museum’s land-mark 1928 Frank Gehry building. The nine new galleries are painted in vibrant colors and emanate off a central spine with an enfilade\, and collections have been reinstalled to tell a more authentic and inclusive history of the art—the artists and artisans who made it and the patrons who commissioned it. At PMA\, she has orchestrated major acquisitions and curated numerous exhibitions\, notably the retrospective Colonial Philadelphia Porcelain: The Art of Bonnin & Morris (2008) and the groundbreaking Classical Splendor: Painted Furniture for a Grand Philadelphia House (2016\, with conservator Peggy Olley). In May 2021\, Kirtley was co-curator of the newly located\, reinstalled\, and reinterpreted galleries for early American art that opened to much fanfare and critical acclaim. DESCRIPTION:Enfield Old Home Days\nJuly 14 – 16\, 2023\nWhat is happening at Enfield Old Home Days?\nFriday\, July 14\n“Wicked Awesome BBQ” and veteran local musician\, Jim Hollis will be “rocking” Huse Park \nSaturday\, July 15\nAll of Enfield will be rocking’ and rollin’! Enfield House of Pizza will provide a picnic lunch at Lakeside Park\, the kiddos at Little Folk Daycare will have their fairy house creations on display\, Never Too Lake will be performing at the Lakeside Pavilion. \nThere will be two bounce houses from 11 am – 4 pm at Huse Park\, an Ice Cream Social at Whitney Hall from 1 pm – 3 pm\, complete with face painting and children’s crafts. There will be a yard sale and luncheon at the Lutheran Church from 9 am – 2 pm\, an opportunity for community sailing with the Mascoma Sailing Club\, and an art display\, bake sale\, and open house at Union Church. All historic buildings in Enfield Center including the Enfield Center Town House and  School House will be open to tour. \nIn the evening\, gather as a community at Enfield Shaker Museum’s historic Stone Mill Building for an evening of great music\, food & drink\, and dancing! Enfield Shaker Museum is partnering with The Baited Hook at Mascoma Lake to bring you a Lobster Bake and Lobster Roll Box Dinner before you dance the night away with local band Shaker inside the beautiful Stone Mill.  The Museum will have a bar available to purchase adult libations. \nLobster Bake Dinner – $40/person\n1 1/4 lb. Lobster \n1/2 Ear Corn on the Cob \nCole Slaw \nLobster Roll Box – $30/person\n5 oz. Lobster Roll \nCole Slaw \nChips \nSunday\, July 16\nJoin the Enfield Conservation Committee for a hike to Cole Pond; beginning at 2:00 pm in the Bog Road parking lot. Check out the Lockehaven School House\, and come back to the grounds of the Stone Mill Building at Enfield Shaker Museum for a Makers Fair full of talented local artisans and craftspeople selling their wares and demonstrating their crafts! Enfield Shaker Museum will be giving free tours to Enfield residents at 1:00 and 3:00 pm come check out our new exhibit “Enfield Shaker Trustees 1795-1904” and a new exhibit on Shaker worship\, dance\, and song. \nYou are not going to want to miss a moment of this action packed weekend! From traditional apple and cherry pies to one-of-a-kind fruit “flag”  and decorated berry pies we have the perfect homemade pie for every taste!! \nPlan to be there when we open\, we sell out fast!!  All pies sell for $20 each. \nCome for the pie\, stay for the music! Jeff Warner will present “Banjos\, Bones\, and Ballads” a program of tavern songs\, banjo tunes\, 18th century New England hymns\, sailor songs\, and humorous stories about traditional singers and their songs. Bring a blanket or lawn chairs and join us for this FREE performance! \n\nEnfield Shaker Museum is hosting Jeff Warner for this “Humanities to Go” presentation. See how our community curators and craftivists translated historic handwritten and printed weather documents into colorful “Tempestries” charting daily temperatures in historic years. \nTour the new exhibition in Brethren’s East Shop\, meet the community curators and craftivists\, and enjoy a talk by Dr. Lourdes B.
