SUMMARY:Spinning With Color Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Spinning With Color Workshop\nSunday\, March 23rd\, 2024\n2:00 – 4:00 pm\nTHIS PROGRAM HAS BEEN CANCELLED\nEnfield Shaker Museum \n447 NH Route 4A \nEnfield\, NH 03748 \nJoin instructor Patty Williams to create vibrant colors and patterns in your own mini skeins of yarn in a 2-hour workshop. Students will create several mini skeins as they develop skills to create color changing yarns as they knit or crochet\, change the colors of fiber without blending\, keep braids and batts from being muddled\, and change commercial yarn colors all by the spinning process. This fast-paced class is perfect for spinners who hate weaving in ends on multi colored projects (or do not dye)\, struggle with braids\, or are gifted that skein they just don’t know how to use. \nAll spinning materials will be provided in class. Students should bring a working wheel or drop spindles to class. \nStudents should know how to spin and ply. \nWho is Patty Williams? \nPatty Williams is the owner of Aker Fiber Farm located in Enfield Center\, NH. She began working with fiber arts as a young girl with her aunt and mom in Walpole\, NH. She learned how to crochet\, wash fleeces\, draft\, or treadle\, and card wool along with tying her shoes. She began Aker Fiber Farm part time after leaving the Army with her husband in Virginia. They then purchased the flock that had been supplying their fleeces and moved everyone to New Hampshire where Patty added Shepherd to her resume. Aker Fiber Farm has evolved into a Farm to Yarn Company providing flax to linen and fleece to yarn to customers all over the US and Canada. \nPatty began teaching fiber arts without even realizing that was what she was doing. Always wanting to share her passion\, she taught friends how to crochet and knit while in grade school and continued as she gathered more skills and moved around the country. Today\, she travels up and down the east coast teaching workshops and giving lectures on Shepherding skills\, flax\, linen\, spinning\, fiber prep\, dyeing\, and knitting. DESCRIPTION:Reuse\, Repurpose\, Recycle a Garment Workshop\nwith Meredith Smith\nFebruary 9th\, 2025\n2:00 – 5:00 pm\n*DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER THIS WORKSHOP IS POSTPONED UNTIL SPRING – Check back soon to see the new date!\nEnfield Shaker Museum \n447 NH Route 4A \nEnfield\, NH 03748 \nJoin local textile artist Meredith Smith to explore the world of mending and repurposing old or worn clothing. This is a beginner friendly class\, but all experience levels are welcome! \nThis workshop will guide participants in ways to reuse\, repurpose\, recycle\, or mend a favorite garment. Old\, worn\, moth-holed\, or outgrown does not mean useless or headed to a land fill. Learn new and innovative ways to bring new life into a much-loved garment. Basic sewing skills are suggested but not required. \nMaterials suggested: \n\nsharp sewing scissors\nseam ripper\npin cushion with sharp pins and needles\nthread to match garment to be worked on and basting thread\nfabric marker or tailors chalk\n(optional) sewing machine\nA garment that needs repurposing!\n\nWho is Meredith Smith? \nMeredith Smith holds a BFA and MAT from Rhode Island School of Design and did post graduate study in costume and theater design at Brown University. Her career includes costume designer\, jewelry designer\, college professor\, and owner/manager of a London based mail order clothing company. Meredith has been State Juried member of the League of NH Craftsmen for over 30 years\, focusing on one-of-a-kind clothing and soft sculpture and serving as a juror for League applicants. Currently\, Meredith heads the Open Fiber Arts Studio at AVA Gallery. In this workshop\, we’ll explore how their methods influenced modern brooms and connect it to the ancient tradition of the besom—a witch’s broom known for its role in folklore and rituals. \nYou’ll begin by selecting your unique handle\, crystals\, and florals\, making each besom personal to your style and intention. Under the expert guidance of instructor Misty Tuttle\,  you’ll then bring your creation to life\, weaving together traditional materials with your personal flair. All materials will be provided—just bring your creativity! \nThis workshop is suitable for beginners and seasoned crafters alike. Misty Tuttle: \nI’ve been an artist for as long as I can remember\, my creative journey beginning in the small town of Enfield where I grew up. After graduating from Mascoma in 2001\, in 2007 I pursued my passion for art and earned an Associate’s Degree in Graphic Design in 2009\, further fueling my love for visual storytelling. \nWhile I’ve explored countless mediums\, watercolor and crafting hold a special place in my heart. The fluidity and unpredictability of watercolor mirror the spontaneity of my creative process\, while crafting allows me to bring tactile\, three-dimensional forms to life. Two years ago\, I stumbled upon the art of creating decorative besoms\, and I fell in love. The rich history and symbolism behind these pieces spoke to me\, and I’ve been weaving intention and creativity into each one ever since. \nI find great joy in sharing my artistic journey with others. Teaching allows me to not only inspire but to be inspired by the limitless potential and creativity in others. I believe in the magic of making and the power of art to connect us all.

Their songs will provide us access to theological principles that undergird and sustain Believers. DESCRIPTION:Enfield\, NH Shakers – OSHER Course\nA Peculiar People:\nThe Enfield\, N.H. Shakers\nMondays\, April 3 through May 8\, 2023\n12:30 pm – 2:30 pm\nSpring Term HyFlex (In-Person and by Zoom) OSHER Course with field trip\nThe Enfield\, NH Shakers considered themselves “A Peculiar People\,” whose faith required that they lived in a close-knit\, highly structured community of Believers. The tenets of their faith–the dual nature of God\, gender and racial equality\, community of property\, pacifism\, stewardship–challenged many in the 19th century\, and offer opportunities for reflection now. \nAlthough the Shakers have left their mark on contemporary art and design\, in this course we will make greatest use of their contributions to American sacred music. Their songs will provide us access to theological principles that undergird and sustain Believers. Additionally\, we will explore the elements of their faith that brought them into conflict with their neighbors\, and limited their ability to attract new converts to their way of life. \nThe Enfield\, NH Shakers – OSHER course will move quickly from a general overview of Shaker history to a detailed exploration of the Enfield and Canterbury communities’ contributions to New Hampshire’s religious and social history. \nThis OSHER Lifelong Learning at Dartmouth course is offered in conjunction with Enfield Shaker Museum and includes a site visit. \nCourse Instructor: Mary Ann Haagen \nShaker scholar\, musician\, and retired music teacher\, Mary Ann’s research focuses on the NH Shaker communities.  She lectures widely on Shaker history\, music\, and dance; has recorded three CDs of Shaker music with a vocal ensemble she directed. The group’s DVD\, We Find No Harm in Dancing\, documents their work with Shaker dance. Her articles on Shaker history appear regularly in historical publications.  The Collected Writings of Elder Henry Cumings\, edited by her is suggested reading and is  available in the Museum Gift Shop. \nCourse Fee: $65/person. DESCRIPTION:Sensational Stocks and Soups from Scratch\nCooking Demonstration & Luncheon\nSaturday\, March 25\, 2023\n10:00 am – 2:00 pm\nIf there’s one truth we know about the Shakers\, it’s that they understood all about sustainability and being a locavore long before the terms were hip or even invented!  There is no doubt they knew how to make sensational stocks and soups from scratch. \nThe Shakers were quite ingenious in the kitchen\, their inventions included a dough-kneading machine\, a water powered butter churn\, and a mechanical apple parer. \nAt a time when the typical American diet revolved around fatty preserved meats and starches\, the Shakers prepared simple\, wholesome food\, detested waste\, and were frugal with all their resources. \nMaking a decent stock is a “must-know” technique for all professional chefs. Join Chef Tony Rinella as he reveals the mystery behind creating robust and flavorful bone and vegetable broths\, and then teaches you how to build on the basics to create all kinds of different varieties of soups. \nDuring the cooking demonstration held in the Dining Room of the Great Stone Dwelling\, Chef Tony will create a savory French onion soup\, and a hearty winter minestrone soup. Once he completed his military training\, Tony returned to the Upper Valley of New Hampshire. Once there\, he began cooking at long standing area restaurants such as The Fort and Lou’s Restaurant and Bakery. \nAfter several years of learning from some talented and seasoned chefs\, Tony was given an opportunity to run his own kitchen. At the tender age of 23\, he managed both Firestones in Quechee\, VT and Bentley’s in Woodstock\, VT. Eventually he moved to Hingham\, MA and joined the team at Eat Well\, LLC\, a restaurant group located on the South Shore. \nUpon returning to the Upper Valley\, Tony accepted a position at The Lyme Inn in Lyme\, NH\, completely rebuilding their tavern and greatly increasing its success. He took the number of meals served from an average of seven per evening to regularly serving 250 people on a weekend evening. \nIn early 2016\, Tony and his wife Lisa started a meal delivery service called What’s For Dinner? For  two and a half years they fed between 40 and 45 families each week. \nTony has come full circle in his career and has returned to his roots! After a nearly four year stint as the Head Chef at The Public House in Quechee\, VT\, he accepted the Executive Chef position at Dr. Coburn’s Tonic in Woodstock\, VT\, where you can find his culinary creations today! \nTony lives in Enfield\, New Hampshire with his wife of seven years\, Lisa\, and their two daughters\, Charlotte Anne and Isla Grace.

SUMMARY:Kids' Maple Sugaring Kit
DESCRIPTION:Sponsored by the Brundage Foundation \nEvery year during late winter\, the Enfield Shaker Brethren and boys went out to tap thousands of sugar maple trees. Carrying on this tradition\, Enfield Shaker Museum is offering a maple tap kit for kids this February. \nThe kit includes supplies for tapping one backyard maple tree and other maple-themed activities. Contents include a maple tap spout\, sap bag holder\, and a 4 gallon sap bag. All you will need is a 7/16″ drill bit. \nKits are free\, but numbers are limited. Please register below. \nKits will be available for pickup February 14-18. To arrange a pickup time\, email education@shakermuseum.org or call (603) 632-4346.
