SUMMARY:Stocks and Soups from Scratch Demo & Lunch
DESCRIPTION:Sensational Stocks and Soups from Scratch\nCooking Demonstration & Luncheon\nSaturday\, March 25\, 2023\n10:00 am – 2:00 pm\nIf there’s one truth we know about the Shakers\, it’s that they understood all about sustainability and being a locavore long before the terms were hip or even invented!  There is no doubt they knew how to make sensational stocks and soups from scratch. \nThe Shakers were quite ingenious in the kitchen\, their inventions included a dough-kneading machine\, a water powered butter churn\, and a mechanical apple parer. \nAt a time when the typical American diet revolved around fatty preserved meats and starches\, the Shakers prepared simple\, wholesome food\, detested waste\, and were frugal with all their resources. \nMaking a decent stock is a “must-know” technique for all professional chefs. Join Chef Tony Rinella as he reveals the mystery behind creating robust and flavorful bone and vegetable broths\, and then teaches you how to build on the basics to create all kinds of different varieties of soups. \nDuring the cooking demonstration held in the Dining Room of the Great Stone Dwelling\, Chef Tony will create a savory French onion soup\, and a hearty winter minestrone soup. Immediately following the demonstration\, lunch will be served. \nGrab a friend and a spot in this flavorful event and learn to make Sensational Soups and Stocks from Scratch! \nLuncheon Menu:\nFrench Onion Soup or Hearty Minestrone \nHarvest Salad (mixed greens\, candied walnuts\, dried fruit\, Gorgonzola\, red onion\, & pomegranate balsamic vinaigrette) \nHomemade Focaccia bread \nBeer\, wine or cider of your choice \nBuy your tickets today!\nMuseum Members: $45/person \nNon-Members: $50/person \nWant to know more about Chef Tony Rinella?\nChef Tony Rinella received his culinary training from the United States Army. Once he completed his military training\, Tony returned to the Upper Valley of New Hampshire. Once there\, he began cooking at long standing area restaurants such as The Fort and Lou’s Restaurant and Bakery. \nAfter several years of learning from some talented and seasoned chefs\, Tony was given an opportunity to run his own kitchen. At the tender age of 23\, he managed both Firestones in Quechee\, VT and Bentley’s in Woodstock\, VT. Eventually he moved to Hingham\, MA and joined the team at Eat Well\, LLC\, a restaurant group located on the South Shore. \nUpon returning to the Upper Valley\, Tony accepted a position at The Lyme Inn in Lyme\, NH\, completely rebuilding their tavern and greatly increasing its success. He took the number of meals served from an average of seven per evening to regularly serving 250 people on a weekend evening. \nIn early 2016\, Tony and his wife Lisa started a meal delivery service called What’s For Dinner? For  two and a half years they fed between 40 and 45 families each week. \nTony has come full circle in his career and has returned to his roots! After a nearly four year stint as the Head Chef at The Public House in Quechee\, VT\, he accepted the Executive Chef position at Dr. Coburn’s Tonic in Woodstock\, VT\, where you can find his culinary creations today! \nTony lives in Enfield\, New Hampshire with his wife of seven years\, Lisa\, and their two daughters\, Charlotte Anne and Isla Grace.

SUMMARY:Enfield\, NH Shakers OSHER Course
DESCRIPTION:Enfield\, NH Shakers – OSHER Course\nA Peculiar People:\nThe Enfield\, N.H. Shakers\nMondays\, April 3 through May 8\, 2023\n12:30 pm – 2:30 pm\nSpring Term HyFlex (In-Person and by Zoom) OSHER Course with field trip\nThe Enfield\, NH Shakers considered themselves “A Peculiar People\,” whose faith required that they lived in a close-knit\, highly structured community of Believers. The tenets of their faith–the dual nature of God\, gender and racial equality\, community of property\, pacifism\, stewardship–challenged many in the 19th century\, and offer opportunities for reflection now. \nAlthough the Shakers have left their mark on contemporary art and design\, in this course we will make greatest use of their contributions to American sacred music. Their songs will provide us access to theological principles that undergird and sustain Believers. Additionally\, we will explore the elements of their faith that brought them into conflict with their neighbors\, and limited their ability to attract new converts to their way of life. \nThe Enfield\, NH Shakers – OSHER course will move quickly from a general overview of Shaker history to a detailed exploration of the Enfield and Canterbury communities’ contributions to New Hampshire’s religious and social history. \nThis OSHER Lifelong Learning at Dartmouth course is offered in conjunction with Enfield Shaker Museum and includes a site visit. \nCourse Instructor: Mary Ann Haagen \nShaker scholar\, musician\, and retired music teacher\, Mary Ann’s research focuses on the NH Shaker communities.  She lectures widely on Shaker history\, music\, and dance; has recorded three CDs of Shaker music with a vocal ensemble she directed. The group’s DVD\, We Find No Harm in Dancing\, documents their work with Shaker dance. Her articles on Shaker history appear regularly in historical publications.  The Collected Writings of Elder Henry Cumings\, edited by her is suggested reading and is  available in the Museum Gift Shop. \nCourse Fee: $65/person.
To register call 603.646.0154 or http://reg130.imperisoft.com \nWant to know more about OSHER Life Long Learning at Dartmouth visit their website https://osher.dartmouth.edu

SUMMARY:Hike to Smith Pond
DESCRIPTION:Hike to Smith Pond\nAlong the Shaker Water Canal System\nwith Peter Thompson\nSaturday\, May 6\, 2023\n8:30 am – 1:00 pm\nTake a hike into history with geologist Peter Thompson! In the 1830s\, the Shakers dammed several ponds\, creating “Shaker Mountain Pond”\, and developed a system of canals to deliver water to their community near Lake Mascoma. Today it is possible to hike to Smith Pond following the remnants of this canal system all the way from Route 4a near Enfield Shaker Museum. \nHikers will gather at the Great Stone Dwelling at 8:30 am for a brief introduction (coffee and pastries provided) and get underway about 9:00 am.  The route will follow the Upper Valley Land Trust trail with a side spur to the waterfall.  Although the hike is of moderate difficulty\, those who wished can follow along the canal (gentle grade) and turn back when the hike gets too steep. \nPlease wear weather appropriate clothing and sturdy shoes/boots. Plan to bring a bag lunch and beverage for a picnic along the way. This hike will provide excellent opportunities for photography. \nLimited to 15 participants. Advance registration required. \nMuseum Members – Free \nNon-Members – Free with Regular Museum Admission \nMore about Peter Thompson:\n\nPeter Thompson taught geology at Cornell College in Iowa and the University of New Hampshire. His research has involved mapping bedrock for state surveys in New England\, most recently in the Moosilauke area. For many years he and his wife Thelma mapped in the Green Mountains\, and he helped edit the 2011 Bedrock Geological Map of Vermont. Although Peter considers himself primarily a “field geologist”\, through teaching all sorts of courses at the undergraduate level\, he has a wide range of interests and knowledge about geological materials and processes. In his spare time\, he enjoys playing Renaissance music\, hiking\, Tai Chi\, gardening\, and dancing.

They can be made as a mocktail or cocktail\, depending on your personal preference. The cocktail tasting includes four types of drinks and recipes to try at home. Once you find the drink you like the best\, a full-sized version will be available to purchase. \nCocktail tasting and hors d’oeuvres begin at 7:30 pm. Tickets include cocktail/mocktail tasting (4 samples)\, hors d’oeuvres buffet\, and music. \nMuseum members – $35/person or $60/couple \nNon-members – $45/person or $75/couple \nWant to know more about Grace Marie Wallace?\nGrace Marie Wallace was born and raised in Worcestershire England\, and started studying classical piano & flute at 11 years of age through ABRSM. After moving to the US\, she became involved with Interplay Jazz & Arts where she discovered her love for jazz vocals. She has had the privilege to study with some amazing jazz vocalists including Madeline Kole & Natalia Bernal\, and for the past four years has been performing in the Upper Valley area of NH & VT. \nRead what people are saying about Grace Marie Wallace:\n\n“I’ll never forget her name. What a great\, young\, fresh voice she is. Her tone is clear as a bell. She sings with a buoyancy and happiness that is easily transferred to her audience.  I look forward to hearing her again and again. “ \nArthur Bakopolus – Arthur’s House of Jazz\, Methuen MA \n“Grace Marie Wallace is one of the finest singers I have worked with. I first heard about her from my colleagues who worked with her at the Interplay jazz camp\, and when I learned I was going to be playing some gigs with her I assumed she would be a talented and promising amateur\, given that she is an accomplished medical researcher and not primarily a musician. Boy was I surprised! Grace’s pitch is impeccable\, her taste in songs eclectic\, with an ear toward obscure gems\, and her thirst for musical knowledge is insatiable\, not to mention the incredible speed at which she attains it. Her sense of rhythm helps an ensemble groove harder. Her commitment to the meaning of the lyric and her appreciation for space and nuance make every performance a unique\, profound experience. Grace is the real deal\, and I can’t wait to hear what she does next.”\nMark Shilansky\nAssociate Professor at Berklee College of Music\nResident Artist at University of New Hampshire

DESCRIPTION:2023 Shaker Collectors Weekend\nAugust 5-7\, 2023\nAn engaging multi-day program designed to enhance your knowledge and enjoyment of collecting Shaker furniture and objects. Featuring talks\, interactive discussions\, and behind-the-scenes experiences with Enfield Shaker Museum’s collection\, 2023 Shaker Collectors Weekend is a rich opportunity to connect with fellow enthusiasts and learn from experts on Shaker material culture and history. \nThe focus of the 2023 Collectors’ Weekend is Shaker Boxes\, encompassing oval pantry boxes\, seed boxes\, and even boxes designed and built to live in! Through presentations\, moderated conversations\, and participatory experiences\, attendees will delve into the history\, significance\, and connoisseurship of Shaker boxes\, as well as strategies to conserve and collect these remarkable objects. \nPROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS of the 2023 Shaker Collectors Weekend\nMaster Class | Shaker Oval Boxes: What We Know & What We Don’t\n Jerry V. Grant\, Director of Collections and Research\, Shaker Museum\, Chatham\, New York \n\nThis illustrated Master Class includes a history of the Shaker oval box industry and tips for identifying a box’s community of origin. During the presentation\, Jerry will make an oval box with Elder Daniel Crosman (1810-1885). \n\nMaster Class | Wood Movement & Solid Wood Construction \nChristian H. Becksvoort\, woodworker\, author\, restorer\, and curmudgeon\, New Gloucester\, Maine \nBasic wood tech\, the joys of quarter-sawn wood\, smart case construction\, why moldings come loose\, why door panels shrink or crack\, and why antiques survived. \nMaterial + Meaning Dialogue | Shaker Color\nPart 1 – Technical Color \nBrece Honeycutt\, visual artist and Winterthur Maker-Creator Fellow \n\nHistorically\, the Shakers lived in a prismatic world\, painting their objects and buildings with “adorning and beauteous colors\,” as noted by Elder Calvin Green.  Honeycutt will discuss both the temporal and the spiritual uses of color\, concentrating on two ‘new pigments’ Prussian Blue and Chrome Yellow. \n\nPart 2 – TBA \nErika Sanchez Goodwillie\, historic paint specialist \nDetails to follow. \nMaterial + Meaning Dialogue | Shaker Seeds\nShaker Seed Industry: From the Ground to the Road \nSharon Duane Koomler\, independent researcher and curator\, Chatham\, New York \nThe Shakers’ seed industry was not an accident. It was an intentional\, cultivated\, and often negotiated industry that produced and distributed quality garden seed throughout much of the eastern United States. Trade routes were established\, sometimes violated – even among Shakers – and ultimately arranged to the best outcome for customers and Shakers alike. \nShaker Seed Boxes: Sowing the Seeds of an Important Industry \nTom Queen\, purveyor of American antiques\, especially Shaker Design\, curator of museum exhibitions\, Columbus\, Ohio \nThe Shakers were among the first to package garden seeds for sale in small paper envelopes\, which were sent out to consigning merchants in lidded wooden boxes emblazoned with stenciled or printed paper labels. Drawing from a range of ephemera from the marketing and distribution of Shaker seeds\, this talk explores the way seed boxes played an important role in one of the longest-lasting\, most profitable\, and wide-reaching Shaker industries. \n\nPresentation | ‘Well done is better than well said’: Presenting American Art Anew at the Philadelphia Museum of Art\n\nAlexandra A. Kirtley\, Montgomery-Garvan Curator of American Decorative Arts\, Philadelphia Museum of Art\, Philadelphia\, Pennsylvania \n\nIn May 2021\, the Philadelphia Museum of Art opened nearly 90\,000 square feet of additional gallery spaces—the culmination of two decades of planning\, design\, and construction. As the first expansion and reinstallation since 1976\, this so-called “Core Project” was completed in 2021 after four years of construction\, and the newly reimagined spaces are the result of the renovation\, reorganization\, and interior expansion of the museum’s landmark 1928 Frank Gehry building. The nine new galleries are painted in vibrant colors and emanate off a central spine with an enfilade\, and museum collections have been reinstalled to tell a more authentic and inclusive history of the art—the artists and artisans who made it and the patrons who commissioned it.  This presentation will explore the Core Project\, highlighting the process by which curators choose what to display and\, most importantly\, how the new narratives evolved after close looking at the collections. \n\n\nPresentation | Restoring a Shaker Office\n\nRobert Adam\, preservation architect\, woodworker\, and founder of the Preservation Carpentry program\, North Bennet Street School\, Boston\, Massachusetts \n\nIn 2002\, Robert Adam purchased a dilapidated building from the site of the former Shaker community in Shirley\, Massachusetts. Originally a Shaker office and more recently a single-family home\, the structure was in dire need of restoration. Adam\, as a preservation architect and fine woodworker\, took on the challenge of moving the structure to a new site and restoring it–every slate roof tile\, clapboard\, and peg–to it would have appeared in the early nineteenth century. This talk explores Adam’s 6 year endeavor to restore a Shaker office. \n\n\nConversation | Maine Shaker Perspectives on Material Culture\n\nBrother Arnold Hadd\, United Society of Shakers\, Sabbathday Lake\, Maine \nMichael Graham\, Director\, Shaker Museum & Library\, Sabbathday Lake\, Maine \n\nPart 1 – A Carrier in Every Collection\nSabbathday Lake Shaker Brother Arnold Hadd and Director Michael Graham will present a narrated slideshow of historic images highlighting the many contributions of Elder Henry Green and Brother Delmer Wilson as some of the most prolific Shaker oval box makers. \nPart 2 – Everything but the Cross\nBrother Arnold will explore how the popularity of the Shakers’ material objects has endangered Shaker culture. \n\nConversation | Painted Boxes and Iconic Stacks: The Collections of Dr. Marvin & Natalie Gliedman and Watt & Jan White\nChip Gliedman\, retired technology analyst\, philatelic research volunteer\, stamp collector\, and son of Dr. Marvin and Natalie Gliedman\, Ridgefield\, Connecticut \nJohn Keith Russell\, antiques dealer specializing in authentic\, historic Shaker material and other objects of fine design\, South Salem\, New York \n\nThis conversation explores the mind of the collector and the opportunities and challenges of stewarding a collection that was thoughtfully assembled by someone else. Chip Gliedman spent most of his life living with an inveterate Shaker collector. This talk will discuss his family’s experience assembling\, preserving\, and exhibiting the iconic stacks of painted Shaker oval boxes from Shaker Design (1986) at the Whitney Museum of American Art. In dialogue\, John Keith Russell will share his recollections of the Gliedmans\, as well as the story of Watt & Janice White of Stamford\, CT\, and their remarkable collection of painted Shaker oval boxes\, which were collected out of a different set of interests and intentions. \nA Glimpse into the Past: Discussion on Building an Archive of Shaker Symposia\nGeorge Kohrman\, independent Shaker researcher\, former Director of the Office of information Technology\, Western Michigan University \nThis presentation will discuss what could happen with recordings from many Berkshire/Hancock Shaker Seminars. George will share two important clips: the first from a 1992 presentation by D. J. J. Gerald McCue (1913-2011) about his early years collecting Shaker material\, and the second from the last interview with Sister Ethel Hudson (1896-1992)\, the last member of the Shaker community in Canterbury\, NH\, who passed away six weeks after the recording was made. \n\nPop-up Exhibition | Bring Your Own Box\nParticipants are invited to bring their favorite Shaker box to include in our Sunday afternoon Pop-up Exhibition.  When you register for the weekend\, let us know what you are planning to bring so we can have a label prepared for your box. \nMEALS AND LODGING\nMeals will be catered by Catherine Erving\, The Rustic Gourmet\, highlighting seasonal and local ingredients including items foraged from the gardens at Enfield Shaker Museum. A Welcome Lobster Bake/Barbecue will be held on Saturday evening in the historic Stone Machine Shop. \nLodging is available in the Great Stone Dwelling on a first come\, first served basis. \nOPTIONAL TOUR\nOn Monday\, August 7 we have scheduled an optional tour in Manchester\, NH of the Zimmerman and Dr. and Mrs. Kalil houses\, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.
