As a self taught and dedicated organic gardener\, she is a recent graduate of the NH Master Gardeners program and holds a Native Plants for the Pollinators Certificate. Susan manages the 7000 square foot Herb Garden at the Enfield Shaker Museum\, where she teaches hands-on herb gardening and herbal crafting. Her passion is to create a community that connects plants and people in celebration of the natural world. \nJune 14th\, 2025 – Part 5 \nThis final workshop focuses on maximizing the herb harvest and preserving it for future use. DESCRIPTION:Berry Basket Workshop\nwith Doña Nazarenko\nSaturday\, June 14th\, 2025\n9:00 am – 5:00 pm\nEnfield Shaker Museum \n447 NH Route 4A \nEnfield\, NH 03748 \nJoin us in the Great Stone Dwelling for a day of basket weaving with Doña Nazerenko of Country Spirit Baskets. By the end of the class you will have created a Shaker-style berry basket\, perfect for the start of berry season. Woven with natural reed\, this has an attached Shaker tape or leather strap to carry around or on the shoulders. All materials come in a pre-fabricated kit made by Dona that you will use during the class. Using a plastic bag or insert while berry picking will prevent juice staining and keep the basket in good condition. When not berry picking remove your plastic bag or container and use for your hobby\, craft or garden needs. This is a beginner friendly workshop\, so you will leave with a completed basket. \nWho is Doña Nazerenko? \nResiding in Tunbridge\, Vermont\, Doña Nazarenko has been weaving since 1988 and teaching since 1994. While living along the New Jersey coast\, Doña developed an interest in woodcrafts and related art forms that developed into her desire to take basket making classes in 1988. \nHer exploration of a different art medium has since evolved into a flourishing talent. She now enjoys making traditional baskets using reed with wooden accents to more challenging baskets using birch bark from the area surrounding her current residence in rural Vermont. \nThe highlight of the early years at her craft was having a one-on-one critique with John McGuire at Peter’s Gallery in 1992. His confidence in her and his discretion continues to help her with her current work. Today she can be seen demonstrating basketry representing Vermont fiber artists at local and out-of-state events. \n*Please bring your own lunch. Everyone is welcome to gather on this day at Enfield Shaker Museum to knit\, crochet\, and weave. All fiber arts welcome! \nThis event is FREE! Bring your project\, your yarn\, your needles\, and a chair\, blanket\, and lunch or snacks. We’ll provide: \n\ntents–but you may wish to bring your own!\nwater\, iced tea or lemonade\, and cookies!\nhourly door prizes!\nlessons for those who want to learn how to knit or crochet!\nstash renewal through a yarn swap!\n\nWe will be knitting washcloths for a community in the Upper Valley who is in need. We’ll provide the cotton yarn and a dishcloth pattern for you to knit. Please bring size 7 or 8 knitting needles! We will have some to loan\, but encourage you to bring your own. It would be wonderful if you also brought a packaged bar of soap to be included with your washcloth. \n \n \nOther knit and crochet items\, from socks to hats to scarves\, are also welcome. Start your project with us and bring them to the Museum when you’re done! \n \nSocial Crafting of crocheting\, weaving\, felting and all fiber arts are welcome too! \nWorldwide Knit in Public Day is the largest knitter-run event in the world. Explore our 10\,000 square foot historic herb beds and witness the beauty and green energy of the plants vibrant spring growth. The sale will be at the front steps of the Great Stone Dwelling\, under a pop-up tent. \nEach herb seedling is in a 4 inch pot and was organically raised in Coast of Maine Potting Soil. Natives\, culinary\, medicinals and more. \nThey are being sold for $3.00. All proceeds will be used to fund our garden expenses and projects. \nThe Herbs were donated by a current Gardener for the sale. \n\n			\n				\n			\n				\n				Sage\n				\n			\n				\n			\n				\n				Primrose\n				\n			\n				\n			\n				\n				Anise Hysop\n				\n			\n				\n			\n				\n				Calendula\n				\n			\n				\n			\n				\n				Feverfew\n				\n		\n\nVisitors will have the opportunity to meet some of our dedicated gardeners and volunteers\, who care for the our garden exhibit. Enjoy a self guided tours\, hands-on activities\, and insightful discussions about the rich history and uses of the herbs. \nVisit our newly created Children’s Sensory Herb Garden\, where children can explore the plants with their curiosity and senses. Located on the north side of the Blueberry bushes this space offers a safe spot for the young and the young at heart. \nA formal guided Herb tour will be offer by herbalist Happy Griffiths and Susan Quinlan at 12:00 pm. \n \nThe Enfield Shaker Herb Garden is maintained through the generous support of our visitors and members. He serves as Professor of Trumpet and Coordinator of Brass Studies at the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts)\, Professor at the Bard Conservatory of Music\, and as a Senior Lecturer at Dartmouth College. Previous appointments include Associate Professor at McGill University’s Schulich School of Music in 2007-2011 (assuming the role of brass area chair in 2009)\, the International Chair of Brass Studies at London’s Royal Academy of Music and Professor of Trumpet at the Rotterdam (NL) Conservatory. Edward Carroll is the Director of the Center for Advanced Musical Studies at Chosen Vale\, and was responsible for the music programming of the California State Summer School of the Arts from 2006-2008. He also chaired the commissioning committee of the International Trumpet Guild (ITG) from 2005-2011. \nMr. Carroll has served as Principal Trumpet of the Rotterdam Philharmonic (James Conlon\, Jeffrey Tate\, and Valery Gergiev\, Music Directors)\, the San Diego Symphony (David Atherton)\, and as Associate Principal Trumpet of the Houston Symphony (Lawrence Foster)\, touring most of the world’s major concert halls and festivals\, and recording for Sony\, EMI\, Virgin\, and Erato. This relaxing reception provides a perfect opportunity to unwind and savor the evening. \nThe highlight of the evening will be a special talk by Shaker scholar Mary Ann Haagen. DESCRIPTION:Woven Rocks\nwith Jean Reed\nFriday\, July 11th\, 2025\n2:00 pm – 6:00 pm\nEnfield Shaker Museum \n447 NH Route 4A \nEnfield\, NH 03748 \nLet me share my weaving knowledge with you\, allowing you to create your own weaving patterns on rocks.  This unusual art form will give you some very basic weaving techniques with materials such as jute\, leather\, waxed linens and other cordages. \nThis is a wonderful way to embellish rocks you may have picked up on the trails or at the beaches\, during your travels.  Some of my rocks have come all the way from Ireland and Colorado.  Others that were gathered from a New Hampshire river bed will be supplied to you\, along with all the materials and tools needed to create unique weaving patterns. \nI urge you to bring some rocks of your own and a couple of small branches (twisted grapevine is great or tiny pieces of driftwood). DESCRIPTION:Shaker Oval Box Making Workshop\nSaturday\, July 19 and Sunday\, July 20\, 2025\n8:30 am – 4:00 pm\nUPDATE: This workshop was cancelled due to instructor emergency!\nEnfield Shaker Museum \n447 NH Route 4A \nEnfield\, NH 03748 \n\n\nLearn how to make your own nest of Shaker oval boxes in our Shaker Oval Box Making Workshop. Guided by experienced box maker Eric Pintar of The Home Shop in Charlotte\, Michigan\, you will make five (5) Shaker Oval Nesting Boxes\, from Pennsylvania cherry wood. The class will focus on preparing the wood\, cutting swallowtail fingers\, steam bending the sides and rims\, and applying a hand rubbed finish. These iconic Shaker oval boxes are made with copper tacks and wooden pegs using the same techniques practiced by the Shaker brothers in their workshops. \nNo previous woodworking experience necessary. Beginners are welcome! \n\nAll tools and materials supplied. Participants should bring a bag lunch each day and water bottle. \nMuseum Member – $265/person \nNon-Member – $285/person \nClass size is limited to 12. Check out room availability here. \nCheck our Events Calendar for other events happening this weekend\, like “Art in the Garden” on Saturday July 19th from 4-6pm. \n\n\nWant to know more about Eric Pintar?\nThe Home Shop\, under the leadership of John Wilson (1940 – 2023)\, taught the craft of Shaker oval box making for more than thirty years.  Eric Pintar has worked at The Home Shop for 28 years. He began there as a shop assistant when he was 16. In 2004\, Eric became an equal partner in The Home Shop with John Wilson.  Since the start of the pandemic Eric has had lead responsibility for the output of The Home Shop including the teaching of Shaker oval box classes. \nJohn Wilson retired fully from the business in December 2022\, leaving Eric Pintar\, his long-time employee and partner\, in charge.  Sadly\, in January of 2023 John Wilson passed away at the age of 83\, leaving Eric Pintar to carry on his legacy of teaching woodworkers of all levels of experience the joy of oval box making.

All concert donations support the ongoing restoration of the organ. \nAll concerts will be followed by a reception in the Museum Herb Garden (weather permitting) or in the Great Stone Dwelling. \nSolo Organ Recital\nSteven Wooddell \n\nSteven Wooddell is currently serving as the organist at Peachtree Presbyterian Church in Atlanta\, Georgia. He also teaches organ and music technology and works with the choral program at Berry College in Rome\, Georgia. Originally from Roanoke\, VA Wooddell earned his Bachelor Music at the Cleveland Institute of Music and his Masters of Organ Performance at Southern Methodist University. Winner of the 1994 Regional AGO Young Organists Competition in Cincinnati\, Steven has played recitals and served as a choral accompanist throughout the southeast and Midwest of the United States. He lives in Rome\, Georgia with his wife Joy and their three children.\nSteven will be playing works by Felix Mendelssohn\, Cesar Franck\, J. S. Bach\, and Percy Whitlock. \n \nOrgan Restoration Update\nBob Waters and Richard Nickerson are continuing to address important restoration needs on the Casavant organ in the Museum’s Mary Keane Chapel. This fall and winter they removed and completely rebuilt the wind chest that receives and regulates the air pressure produced by the organ’s electric blower. This included replacing all the original leather work that controls the release of air to the organ pipes. In addition to maintaining the organ’s tuning\, they have been repairing coupling mechanisms that have failed. Unfortunately the Casavant company no longer makes certain replacement parts\, so some aspects of the restoration work requires creative problem solving. We are fortunate to\nhave two craftsmen\, well versed in the intricacies of Casavant organ construction\, caring for this precious instrument. \nThank you for your support of their ongoing restoration work. \n

DESCRIPTION:Cat Head Basket Workshop\nwith Dona Nazarenko\nSaturday\, July 26th\, 2025\n9:00 am – 5:00 pm\nEnfield Shaker Museum \n447 NH Route 4A \nEnfield\, NH 03748 \nJoin us in the Great Stone Dwelling for a day of basket weaving with Dona Nazarenko from Country Spirit Baskets. When making this basket you are using natural and dyed reed as this is a more modern style of the Traditional Shaker Cat Head basket. Shaping this into a Cat Head can be tricky as the sides will increase then to reach the rim area the rows must decrease in size. This is a beginner friendly class and Donna creates a pre-fabricated kit for each participant. You will leave the workshop with a completed basket. \nWho is Doña Nazerenko? \nResiding in Tunbridge\, Vermont\, Doña Nazarenko has been weaving since 1988 and teaching since 1994. While living along the New Jersey coast\, Doña developed an interest in woodcrafts and related art forms that developed into her desire to take basket making classes in 1988. \nHer exploration of a different art medium has since evolved into a flourishing talent. She now enjoys making traditional baskets using reed with wooden accents to more challenging baskets using birch bark from the area surrounding her current residence in rural Vermont. \nThe highlight of the early years at her craft was having a one-on-one critique with John McGuire at Peter’s Gallery in 1992. His confidence in her and his discretion continues to help her with her current work. Today she can be seen demonstrating basketry representing Vermont fiber artists at local and out-of-state events. \n*Please bring your own lunch. This walk will be lead by Devin Guilfoyle from the New Hampshire Audubon’s Newfound Center. The trails your group will be walking are on conservation land\, where you may have the chance to see a bobolink and other rare birds. \nDevin Guilfoyle was recently promoted to Newfound Centers Public Programs Coordinator. Hailing from Schenectady\, New York\, he holds a bachelor’s degree in Conservation Biology from St. Lawrence University with years of experience in environmental education taking him to Vermont\, Georgia\, Minnesota\, Maine\, and now New Hampshire! \n“I’ve always been interested in the natural world\, particularly birds\,” Devin says. This will be an opportunity for them to use their imaginations and tap into their artistic side. Decorating their journals will create a very personal and whimsical book of their own and give them a place to write their special memories or explore their dreams. \n \nWith the exception of a few items\, their kit will include recylced and salvaged products. They will have a choice of books\, papers\, colored pencils and a wide variety of embellishments. During their time with me they will learn basic skills in rubber stamping. \n \nThis class is appropriate for children ages 5-16 or anyone who is interested in journaling. Parents need not be present during workshop. All concert donations support the ongoing restoration of the organ. \nAll concerts will be followed by a reception in the Museum Herb Garden (weather permitting) or in the Great Stone Dwelling. \nOrgan and Trumpet Recital\nMusical Fireworks: Trumpet and Organ music by Bach\, Purcell\, Mouret\, Hovaness\, and Peeters. \nTrumpeter Jacob Crawford has just finished his second year at Dartmouth College\, where he studies engineering with a focus on materials for application in the energy sector. His interest in music focuses on repertoire from the Baroque and Renaissance eras. He is also a ski instructor and soccer coach. Organist Henry Danaher is the Director of Music at The Church of Christ at Dartmouth College\, the principal accompanist for the Dartmouth College Glee Club\, and with the William Jewett Tucker Center\, serves as Dartmouth’s College Organist. Henry has given two solo organ recitals and co-directed three choral projects at the Mary Keane Chapel. \nHenry Danaher\n  \nJacob Crawford\nOrgan Restoration Update\nBob Waters and Richard Nickerson are continuing to address important restoration needs on the Casavant organ in the Museum’s Mary Keane Chapel. This fall and winter they removed and completely rebuilt the wind chest that receives and regulates the air pressure produced by the organ’s electric blower. This included replacing all the original leather work that controls the release of air to the organ pipes. In addition to maintaining the organ’s tuning\, they have been repairing coupling mechanisms that have failed. Unfortunately the Casavant company no longer makes certain replacement parts\, so some aspects of the restoration work requires creative problem solving. We are fortunate to\nhave two craftsmen\, well versed in the intricacies of Casavant organ construction\, caring for this precious instrument. \nThank you for your support of their ongoing restoration work.

DESCRIPTION:2025 Summer Outdoor Concert Series\nLive music starts at 7 pm. Vending begins at 6 pm.\nOn the lawn at the Stone Machine Shop.\nWhat’s better than a relaxing evening outside? FREE live music! \nJoin us on the lawn of the beautiful Stone Machine Shop on Wednesdays of July and August for some free\, live music! Bring chairs or a picnic blanket and spread out on the lawn and listen to the band play. \nBring a picnic dinner to enjoy or purchase food from the on-site food truck. You’re welcome to bring your own food and non-alcoholic drinks. (State liquor laws prohibit outside alcohol from being brought onto the premises.) \nThis is not a BYOB event. \nLeashed and well-behaved dogs are welcome to join us. \nVending begins at 6 pm and the music starts at 7 pm. Lewis and MaryBeth Zamer\, known on stage as The Twangtown Paramours\, have made a name for themselves defying boundaries with their award-winning catalogue of Americana\, Folk\, and Blues anthems. With a slew of accolades for their first three full-length albums\, they’ve earned a loyal following\, balancing serious instrumental and vocal chops with witty stage banter and a lighthearted approach to life.  Their latest album\, The Wind Will Change Again\, is an acoustic Folk record consisting of a collection of songs that the Twangers call their best to date. It was released in January of 2025 to rave reviews\, came in at #1 on the Folk Alliance International Chart\, and had six of the top ten songs for the month of release. \nHit songwriter\, session musician\, and producer Mike Lewis was born in NYC\, but his sound is informed by a mix of experiences across the country’s major music centers\, including NYC\, L.A.\, Austin\, and Nashville. In this workshop\, you’ll learn a simple yet effective binding technique\, such as pamphlet stitching\, to create the journal’s structure. Once the journal is assembled\, you’ll have the opportunity to decorate both the cover and pages with your botanical prints\, collages\, and additional creative elements like stamps\, drawings\, or stenciling. This workshop is designed to inspire you to use your journal as a space for future creative projects\, notes\, or sketches\, all while celebrating the beauty of nature in your designs. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWorkshop 3: Journal Making with Botanical Prints and Collage – August 14th\, 2025\n\nObjective: Teach participants to create a journal using their botanical prints and collages.\nMaterials: Collage materials from previous workshops\, blank pages\, binding materials (needle\, thread\, cardboard or chipboard)\, botanical images for decoration.\nActivities:\n\nIntroduction to Journal Binding: Demonstrate a simple binding technique like pamphlet stitching to create the structure of the journal.\nDecorating the Journal: Participants will decorate their journal covers and pages using their botanical prints\, collages\, and additional elements such as stamps\, drawings\, or stenciling.\n\nPersonalizing the Journal: Encourage participants to use their journals for future creative projects\, notes\, or sketches\, giving them space to reflect and design with botanical inspiration\n\n\n\n\nWho is Pam Smith? \n\nPam is a New Hampshire artist and printmaker. She is an avid gardener\, and her creative inspiration comes from the natural beauty all around us. Her work ranges from botanical relief prints and monoprints to whimsical collages and often combines traditional printmaking\, painting and mixed media. \nPam’s original linocut prints and monoprints are designed\, hand-carved\, and hand-pressed by hand at Art Haven Studio in Enfield.
