As you engage in your own research\, listen to lectures\, or take part in activities\, we invite you to reflect on any insights or “aha” moments that relate to your Shaker interests. Please take a moment to write a sentence or two explaining any novel insights you’ve had. DESCRIPTION:Breakfast of Champions Revival\nBenefit Concert\nMay 1st\, 2025\n6:00 – 9:00 pm\nChosen Vale Performance Center \n410 NH Route 4A \nEnfield\, NH 03748 \nJoin us for a benefit concert for Enfield Shaker Museum by Breakfast of Champions Revival! Jay Boucher\, Gary ‘Hub’ Hubbard and friends will be playing what they call Bluegrass Renegade. The original band-mates Jay and ‘Hub’ have been playing together for 48 years. They are offering this concert in honor of their first meeting. Jay wrote the story of their journey down and will share many anecdotes during their performance on the 1st of May. \nThe Story of Breakfast of Champions: \nMay 1\, 1977\, is where this journey started. Mutual friends were hosting a jam session ‘May Day’ party at their house in Enfield Center. So\, my best friend Robby and I headed there with our banjo and guitar to join in. Robby and I had lived together in several places\, and at one point we both made a commitment to each other that I would learn the guitar and he would learn the banjo. So\, we both took some lessons and just started playing\, and playing\, and playing until our fingers bled. We couldn’t get enough of it\, and we were anxious to show our friends some of the tunes we had learned. \nThere were several musicians playing music that day\, but for some reason\, we just seemed to click with two guys name Gary ‘Hub’ Hubbard and Matt Rogers\, who were also good friends who had been playing music together. We had a blast playing at that party with them\, and we left the party with the intention of getting the four of us together to work out some tunes- which we did. \n \nThen there was this Choctaw Festival on the common in Lyme\, NH and we were invited to play a few tunes\, which we gladly did. A guy who was in the crowd for this figured out a way to get in touch with Hub and asked if we would play for a couple hours for a party he was throwing for a bunch of Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital folks at his house on the river in Lyme. \nThis was the launch of what became the Breakfast of Champions\, and for the next five years we tore it up all over the Upper Valley (and beyond)\, bringing in huge crowds and having a ball in the process. We’d also go to bluegrass festivals and compete in the parking lot picking contests and always did very well with those. \n \nWe always practiced at my place on Thursday nights\, as we figured we could always stumble through Friday and then we were onto the weekend. These Thursday night picking sessions became iconic\, and despite a few breaks over the decades while we were all raising kids\, starting businesses\, etc.\, these Thursday night picking sessions are still going stronger than ever! When I reflect on the cast of characters that have been a part of these picking sessions over the last 48 years\, it truly warms my heart\, and really proves that there is power in music that is shared by so many people. The friends we have made and maintained over this span of 48 years is incredible to say the least. \n \n \n \nSo\, on May 1\, 2025\, 48 years to the day when Hub and I first met and played music together\, we want to share some stories\, lots of laughs and of course the music we have been playing all this time. Although the numbers of pickers that have joined in on our Thursday night picking sessions are substantial\, on this night we’ll be introducing you to the core guys\, since we can only put so many people on the stage at one time. These guys all come with their own story\, and I look forward to sharing these stories with everyone. These guys also come with their own unique talents as well\, which will be on display that evening. Most importantly\, these guys are simply the best! We have more fun sitting around the table at my house on Thursday nights\, playing music for six hours or so\, giving each other a hard time and laughing our tails off. We plan on doing a lot of that on May 1st\, so bring your sense of humor with you. \nI’m a huge ‘fate’ guy\, as I have always believed that things happen for a reason. One night shortly after New Years day\, I had this vivid dream that started on May 1st\, 1977\, at the picking session where Hub and I first played music together. The dream carried on through the years\, reliving all the highlights of our musical journey and friendship\, and it ended on May 1\, 2025- at the Chosen Vale Performance Center (of all places)\, with me and my buddies putting on a show to raise money for the Enfield Shake Museum and their new performance center. This is a great venue\, and hopefully this event will expose this place to a lot of musicians throughout the upper valley as a perfect spot for performances of all kinds. The place seats around 300 people\, which fills a big void for venues of this size in the area. \nHaving been involved in the development of the Shaker Village properties since the mid-80’s when the developers purchased the property from the Catholic church\, I find it easy to take this place for granted. However\, this village is a tremendous asset to this area\, and the folks behind the Enfield Shaker Museum have poured their hearts and souls into making this place what it is today. Their recent purchase of the LaSalette property significantly enhances their offerings\, and this new performance center is destined for great things. \nPlease come and join us for this event and help us raise money for a great cause and have a fun time in the process. We are donating our time that night to the Museum and hope that you’ll be in a generous mood that night. Exploring a variety of plant communities\, become familiar with some of the common ferns and spring flowers of the Upper Valley. Some discussion of phenology (the study of how living things time natural events) and recognition of invasive\, non-native species will be included. \nThe walk will be mostly on easy terrain\, but will include some moderate hills and maybe a bit of bushwhacking. Participants will learn herb garden basics. We’ll cover plant selection\, planting\, and maintenance. Then we’ll explore seasonal care techniques. This is perfect for beginners or seasoned gardeners looking to deepen their herbal expertise. All sessions will be hands-on\, and participants will grow a tray of herbs ready to plant in their home garden. \nWho is Susan Quinlan?\nSusan is a retired registered nurse who has been creating and caring for gardens and people for fifty years. As a self taught and dedicated organic gardener\, she is a recent graduate of the NH Master Gardeners program and holds a Native Plants for the Pollinators Certificate. Susan manages the 7000 square foot Herb Garden at the Enfield Shaker Museum\, where she teaches hands-on herb gardening and herbal crafting. Her passion is to create a community that connects plants and people in celebration of the natural world. \nMay 17th\, 2025 – Part 4 \nPlanting\, Care and Maintenance \nIn this workshop you will learn the best techniques for bed preparation\, propagation by division or layer and how to transplant your plants into their growing bed. We will explore the many tasks needed to nurture and protect young plants during this vulnerable time. \nSite preparation \n\nWatering and fertilizing schedules\nTransplanting and planting\nPruning and caring for herb plants\n\nGarden Maintenance \n\nWeed control\nMulching\nIrrigation\nCompost\n\nJune 14th\, 2025 – Part 5 \nThis final workshop focuses on maximizing the herb harvest and preserving it for futrue use. DESCRIPTION:Berry Basket Workshop\nwith Doña Nazarenko\nSaturday\, June 14th\, 2025\n9:00 am – 5:00 pm\nEnfield Shaker Museum \n447 NH Route 4A \nEnfield\, NH 03748 \nJoin us in the Great Stone Dwelling for a day of basket weaving with Doña Nazerenko of Country Spirit Baskets. By the end of the class you will have created a Shaker-style berry basket\, perfect for the start of berry season. Woven with natural reed\, this has an attached Shaker tape or leather strap to carry around or on the shoulders. All materials come in a pre-fabricated kit made by Dona that you will use during the class. Using a plastic bag or insert while berry picking will prevent juice staining and keep the basket in good condition. When not berry picking remove your plastic bag or container and use for your hobby\, craft or garden needs. This is a beginner friendly workshop\, so you will leave with a completed basket. \nWho is Doña Nazerenko? \nResiding in Tunbridge\, Vermont\, Doña Nazarenko has been weaving since 1988 and teaching since 1994. While living along the New Jersey coast\, Doña developed an interest in woodcrafts and related art forms that developed into her desire to take basket making classes in 1988. \nHer exploration of a different art medium has since evolved into a flourishing talent. She now enjoys making traditional baskets using reed with wooden accents to more challenging baskets using birch bark from the area surrounding her current residence in rural Vermont. \nThe highlight of the early years at her craft was having a one-on-one critique with John McGuire at Peter’s Gallery in 1992. His confidence in her and his discretion continues to help her with her current work. Today she can be seen demonstrating basketry representing Vermont fiber artists at local and out-of-state events. \n*Please bring your own lunch. He serves as Professor of Trumpet and Coordinator of Brass Studies at the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts)\, Professor at the Bard Conservatory of Music\, and as a Senior Lecturer at Dartmouth College. Previous appointments include Associate Professor at McGill University’s Schulich School of Music in 2007-2011 (assuming the role of brass area chair in 2009)\, the International Chair of Brass Studies at London’s Royal Academy of Music and Professor of Trumpet at the Rotterdam (NL) Conservatory. Edward Carroll is the Director of the Center for Advanced Musical Studies at Chosen Vale\, and was responsible for the music programming of the California State Summer School of the Arts from 2006-2008. He also chaired the commissioning committee of the International Trumpet Guild (ITG) from 2005-2011. \nMr. Carroll has served as Principal Trumpet of the Rotterdam Philharmonic (James Conlon\, Jeffrey Tate\, and Valery Gergiev\, Music Directors)\, the San Diego Symphony (David Atherton)\, and as Associate Principal Trumpet of the Houston Symphony (Lawrence Foster)\, touring most of the world’s major concert halls and festivals\, and recording for Sony\, EMI\, Virgin\, and Erato. A frequent guest with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center\, Edward Carroll directed\, recorded\, and toured with the New York Trumpet Ensemble from 1979 to 1988. He has performed with the London Sinfonietta\, Speculum Musicae\, Music Today\, I Musici di Montreal\, Orpheus\, the Bach Aria Group\, the Handel and Haydn Society (Boston)\, and as soloist with many North American and European orchestras. Sir Harrison Birtwistle\, Larry Polansky\, Anne LeBaron\, Bruce Adolphe\, and Pulitzer Prize winner Paul Moravec are among the many composers that have written new music for him\, and his many solo recordings can be found on the Sony\, Vox\, MHS\, and Newport Classic labels.

This scenic hike will take you through the lush Shaker Forest and rolling fields\, offering stunning views of Mascoma Lake. Along the way\, learn about the Shaker community’s rich history and their deep connection to the land. \nUpon reaching the Feast Ground\, we will gather to witness the spectacular summer solstice sunset. Enjoy a selection of fine wines and artisanal cheeses while mingling with fellow hikers and nature enthusiasts. This relaxing reception provides a perfect opportunity to unwind and savor the evening. \nThe highlight of the evening will be a special talk by Shaker scholar Mary Ann Haagen. He serves as Professor of Trumpet and Coordinator of Brass Studies at the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts)\, Professor at the Bard Conservatory of Music\, and as a Senior Lecturer at Dartmouth College. Previous appointments include Associate Professor at McGill University’s Schulich School of Music in 2007-2011 (assuming the role of brass area chair in 2009)\, the International Chair of Brass Studies at London’s Royal Academy of Music and Professor of Trumpet at the Rotterdam (NL) Conservatory. Edward Carroll is the Director of the Center for Advanced Musical Studies at Chosen Vale\, and was responsible for the music programming of the California State Summer School of the Arts from 2006-2008. He also chaired the commissioning committee of the International Trumpet Guild (ITG) from 2005-2011. \nMr. Carroll has served as Principal Trumpet of the Rotterdam Philharmonic (James Conlon\, Jeffrey Tate\, and Valery Gergiev\, Music Directors)\, the San Diego Symphony (David Atherton)\, and as Associate Principal Trumpet of the Houston Symphony (Lawrence Foster)\, touring most of the world’s major concert halls and festivals\, and recording for Sony\, EMI\, Virgin\, and Erato. A frequent guest with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center\, Edward Carroll directed\, recorded\, and toured with the New York Trumpet Ensemble from 1979 to 1988. He has performed with the London Sinfonietta\, Speculum Musicae\, Music Today\, I Musici di Montreal\, Orpheus\, the Bach Aria Group\, the Handel and Haydn Society (Boston)\, and as soloist with many North American and European orchestras. Sir Harrison Birtwistle\, Larry Polansky\, Anne LeBaron\, Bruce Adolphe\, and Pulitzer Prize winner Paul Moravec are among the many composers that have written new music for him\, and his many solo recordings can be found on the Sony\, Vox\, MHS\, and Newport Classic labels.

You’re welcome to bring your own food and non-alcoholic drinks. (State liquor laws prohibit outside alcohol from being brought onto the premises.) \nThis is not a BYOB event. \nLeashed and well-behaved dogs are welcome to join us. \nVending begins at 6 pm and the music starts at 7 pm. The Museum’s gift shop will also be open for visitors to visit either before or during the show. \nIn the case of bad weather\, the show will go on!\nWe will move the concert inside. Unfortunately\, picnic blankets might be slightly less comfortable on the wood floor. \nBeer\, hard cider\, wine\, soda\, and snacks will be available to purchase during the concert. \nConcert Dates:\nJuly 2nd – Twangtown Paramours\nVendor: Enfield House of Pizza\n \nNashville-based husband-and-wife duo Mike T. With a slew of accolades for their first three full-length albums\, they’ve earned a loyal following\, balancing serious instrumental and vocal chops with witty stage banter and a lighthearted approach to life.  Their latest album\, The Wind Will Change Again\, is an acoustic Folk record consisting of a collection of songs that the Twangers call their best to date. It was released in January of 2025 to rave reviews\, came in at #1 on the Folk Alliance International Chart\, and had six of the top ten songs for the month of release. \nHit songwriter\, session musician\, and producer Mike Lewis was born in NYC\, but his sound is informed by a mix of experiences across the country’s major music centers\, including NYC\, L.A.\, Austin\, and Nashville. Lead singer MaryBeth Zamer was a fixture in the Washington\, DC club scene for years and preformed with a popular local cover band before meeting up with Mike in 2009.  They released their debut self-titled album in 2010. \nJuly 9th – Never Too Late\nVendor: Enfield Mascoma Lion’s Club\n \nNever Too Late creates Americana and classic folk music performances with rich vocal harmonies accompanied by lively instrumentation. This hands-on session will introduce you to essential collage techniques such as cutting\, layering\, and arranging printed papers\, with a special focus on incorporating plant-inspired designs. You’ll learn how to use repetition\, symmetry\, and contrast to create visually dynamic compositions\, all while exploring the elegance of botanical forms. She is an avid gardener\, and her creative inspiration comes from the natural beauty all around us. DESCRIPTION:Woven Rocks\nwith Jean Reed\nFriday\, July 11th\, 2025\n2:00 pm – 6:00 pm\nEnfield Shaker Museum \n447 NH Route 4A \nEnfield\, NH 03748 \nLet me share my weaving knowledge with you\, allowing you to create your own weaving patterns on rocks.  This unusual art form will give you some very basic weaving techniques with materials such as jute\, leather\, waxed linens and other cordages. \nThis is a wonderful way to embellish rocks you may have picked up on the trails or at the beaches\, during your travels.  Some of my rocks have come all the way from Ireland and Colorado.  Others that were gathered from a New Hampshire river bed will be supplied to you\, along with all the materials and tools needed to create unique weaving patterns. \nI urge you to bring some rocks of your own and a couple of small branches (twisted grapevine is great or tiny pieces of driftwood). FREE live music! \nJoin us on the lawn of the beautiful Stone Machine Shop on Wednesdays of July and August for some free\, live music! Bring chairs or a picnic blanket and spread out on the lawn and listen to the band play. \nBring a picnic dinner to enjoy or purchase food from the on-site food truck. You’re welcome to bring your own food and non-alcoholic drinks. (State liquor laws prohibit outside alcohol from being brought onto the premises.) \nThis is not a BYOB event. \nLeashed and well-behaved dogs are welcome to join us. \nVending begins at 6 pm and the music starts at 7 pm. Lewis and MaryBeth Zamer\, known on stage as The Twangtown Paramours\, have made a name for themselves defying boundaries with their award-winning catalogue of Americana\, Folk\, and Blues anthems. With a slew of accolades for their first three full-length albums\, they’ve earned a loyal following\, balancing serious instrumental and vocal chops with witty stage banter and a lighthearted approach to life.  Their latest album\, The Wind Will Change Again\, is an acoustic Folk record consisting of a collection of songs that the Twangers call their best to date. It was released in January of 2025 to rave reviews\, came in at #1 on the Folk Alliance International Chart\, and had six of the top ten songs for the month of release. \nHit songwriter\, session musician\, and producer Mike Lewis was born in NYC\, but his sound is informed by a mix of experiences across the country’s major music centers\, including NYC\, L.A.\, Austin\, and Nashville. DESCRIPTION:Shaker Oval Box Making Workshop\nSaturday\, July 19 and Sunday\, July 20\, 2025\n8:30 am – 4:00 pm\nUPDATE: This workshop was cancelled due to instructor emergency!\nEnfield Shaker Museum \n447 NH Route 4A \nEnfield\, NH 03748 \n\n\nLearn how to make your own nest of Shaker oval boxes in our Shaker Oval Box Making Workshop. Guided by experienced box maker Eric Pintar of The Home Shop in Charlotte\, Michigan\, you will make five (5) Shaker Oval Nesting Boxes\, from Pennsylvania cherry wood. The class will focus on preparing the wood\, cutting swallowtail fingers\, steam bending the sides and rims\, and applying a hand rubbed finish. These iconic Shaker oval boxes are made with copper tacks and wooden pegs using the same techniques practiced by the Shaker brothers in their workshops. \nNo previous woodworking experience necessary. Beginners are welcome! \n\nAll tools and materials supplied. Participants should bring a bag lunch each day and water bottle. \nMuseum Member – $265/person \nNon-Member – $285/person \nClass size is limited to 12. Check out room availability here. \nCheck our Events Calendar for other events happening this weekend\, like “Art in the Garden” on Saturday July 19th from 4-6pm. \n\n\nWant to know more about Eric Pintar?\nThe Home Shop\, under the leadership of John Wilson (1940 – 2023)\, taught the craft of Shaker oval box making for more than thirty years.  Eric Pintar has worked at The Home Shop for 28 years. He began there as a shop assistant when he was 16. In 2004\, Eric became an equal partner in The Home Shop with John Wilson.  Since the start of the pandemic Eric has had lead responsibility for the output of The Home Shop including the teaching of Shaker oval box classes. \nJohn Wilson retired fully from the business in December 2022\, leaving Eric Pintar\, his long-time employee and partner\, in charge.  Sadly\, in January of 2023 John Wilson passed away at the age of 83\, leaving Eric Pintar to carry on his legacy of teaching woodworkers of all levels of experience the joy of oval box making.
