DESCRIPTION:Cat Head Basket Workshop\nwith Dona Nazarenko\nSaturday\, July 26th\, 2025\n9:00 am – 5:00 pm\nEnfield Shaker Museum \n447 NH Route 4A \nEnfield\, NH 03748 \nJoin us in the Great Stone Dwelling for a day of basket weaving with Dona Nazarenko from Country Spirit Baskets. When making this basket you are using natural and dyed reed as this is a more modern style of the Traditional Shaker Cat Head basket. Shaping this into a Cat Head can be tricky as the sides will increase then to reach the rim area the rows must decrease in size. This is a beginner friendly class and Donna creates a pre-fabricated kit for each participant. You will leave the workshop with a completed basket. \nWho is Doña Nazerenko? \nResiding in Tunbridge\, Vermont\, Doña Nazarenko has been weaving since 1988 and teaching since 1994. While living along the New Jersey coast\, Doña developed an interest in woodcrafts and related art forms that developed into her desire to take basket making classes in 1988. \nHer exploration of a different art medium has since evolved into a flourishing talent. She now enjoys making traditional baskets using reed with wooden accents to more challenging baskets using birch bark from the area surrounding her current residence in rural Vermont. \nThe highlight of the early years at her craft was having a one-on-one critique with John McGuire at Peter’s Gallery in 1992. His confidence in her and his discretion continues to help her with her current work. Today she can be seen demonstrating basketry representing Vermont fiber artists at local and out-of-state events. \n*Please bring your own lunch. All concert donations support the ongoing restoration of the organ. \nAll concerts will be followed by a reception in the Museum Herb Garden (weather permitting) or in the Great Stone Dwelling. \nFlute and Organ Recital\nChristina Jennings & Gail Jennings\nIn great demand as a teacher\, Christina Jennings is Associate Professor of Flute at the University of Colorado Boulder\, and on the\nsummer faculty of Greenwood Music Camp. Director of the Panoramic Flutist Seminar and the Once a Flutist Festival\, both in Boulder.\nGail Jennings has recently retired after 31 years as Organist at Bethlehem United Church of Christ in Ann Arbor\, Michigan. Gail attended the Mannes College of Music and the Juilliard School. She has studied organ with Phillip Steinhaus\, Anthony Newman\, and Marilyn Mason. \nChristina Jennings\nGail Jennings\nOrgan Restoration Update\nBob Waters and Richard Nickerson are continuing to address important restoration needs on the Casavant organ in the Museum’s Mary Keane Chapel. This fall and winter they removed and completely rebuilt the wind chest that receives and regulates the air pressure produced by the organ’s electric blower. This included replacing all the original leather work that controls the release of air to the organ pipes. In addition to maintaining the organ’s tuning\, they have been repairing coupling mechanisms that have failed. Unfortunately the Casavant company no longer makes certain replacement parts\, so some aspects of the restoration work requires creative problem solving. We are fortunate to\nhave two craftsmen\, well versed in the intricacies of Casavant organ construction\, caring for this precious instrument. \nThank you for your support of their ongoing restoration work.

Learn the basics of bird identification\, the wide diversity of birds you might see in New Hampshire\, and some tools of the trade to help you name the birds around you. This walk will be lead by Devin Guilfoyle from the New Hampshire Audubon’s Newfound Center. The trails your group will be walking are on conservation land\, where you may have the chance to see a bobolink and other rare birds. \nDevin Guilfoyle was recently promoted to Newfound Centers Public Programs Coordinator. Hailing from Schenectady\, New York\, he holds a bachelor’s degree in Conservation Biology from St. Lawrence University with years of experience in environmental education taking him to Vermont\, Georgia\, Minnesota\, Maine\, and now New Hampshire! \n“I’ve always been interested in the natural world\, particularly birds\,” Devin says. His appreciation of nature began with exploring the woods behind his grandmother’s house as a child and solidified in his undergraduate studies through classes such as ecology\, ornithology\, and ecology of lakes and rivers. Through outdoor education and programming\, Devin strives “to inspire a sense of wonder about the natural world in visitors\, young and old. FREE live music! \nJoin us on the lawn of the beautiful Stone Machine Shop on Wednesdays of July and August for some free\, live music! Bring chairs or a picnic blanket and spread out on the lawn and listen to the band play. \nBring a picnic dinner to enjoy or purchase food from the on-site food truck. You’re welcome to bring your own food and non-alcoholic drinks. Lewis and MaryBeth Zamer\, known on stage as The Twangtown Paramours\, have made a name for themselves defying boundaries with their award-winning catalogue of Americana\, Folk\, and Blues anthems. With a slew of accolades for their first three full-length albums\, they’ve earned a loyal following\, balancing serious instrumental and vocal chops with witty stage banter and a lighthearted approach to life.  Their latest album\, The Wind Will Change Again\, is an acoustic Folk record consisting of a collection of songs that the Twangers call their best to date. DESCRIPTION:Children’s Junk Journal Workshop\nwith Jean Reed\nFriday\, August 8th\, 2025\n1:00 – 5:00 pm\nEnfield Shaker Museum \n447 NH Route 4A \nEnfield\, NH 03748 \nLet your child spend a few of hours with me to create their personalized Junk Journal. This will be an opportunity for them to use their imaginations and tap into their artistic side. Decorating their journals will create a very personal and whimsical book of their own and give them a place to write their special memories or explore their dreams. \n \nWith the exception of a few items\, their kit will include recylced and salvaged products. They will have a choice of books\, papers\, colored pencils and a wide variety of embellishments. During their time with me they will learn basic skills in rubber stamping. \n \nThis class is appropriate for children ages 5-16 or anyone who is interested in journaling. Parents need not be present during workshop. Feel free to email Jean Reed at MurrayHillWeaving@gmail.com with any questions. \nWho is Jean Reed? \nMurray Hill Weaving is Jean Reed’s dream come true – resulting from her love of basketry\, and weaving for over 45 years. \nBasketry classes took a natural turn into chair seating and other types of art which include a variety of children’s workshops. Located at 685 Murray Hill Road\, Hill\, NH\, the heart of New Hampshire\, Jean teaches in her shop\, and art studios around the country. \nShe has taught for the NH League of Craftsmen\, as well conventions in Michigan\, North Carolina\, Kentucky\, Stowe Basket Festival and Northeast Basketmakers Guild. His interest in music focuses on repertoire from the Baroque and Renaissance eras. He is also a ski instructor and soccer coach. Organist Henry Danaher is the Director of Music at The Church of Christ at Dartmouth College\, the principal accompanist for the Dartmouth College Glee Club\, and with the William Jewett Tucker Center\, serves as Dartmouth’s College Organist. With a slew of accolades for their first three full-length albums\, they’ve earned a loyal following\, balancing serious instrumental and vocal chops with witty stage banter and a lighthearted approach to life.  Their latest album\, The Wind Will Change Again\, is an acoustic Folk record consisting of a collection of songs that the Twangers call their best to date. He is currently the Prinicpal Organist at Mechanics Hall in Worcester\, MA.This evening of summer fun will be a ”double feature” starting with the beautiful film The Red Balloon\, an award-winning short film elegantly capturing the adventures of a boy who befriends a seemingly sentient balloonand follows it through the streets of Paris. Followed by The Cameraman a 1928 American silent romantic comedy film directed by Edward Sedgwick and starring Buster Keaton. \nPeter Krasinski\nOrgan Restoration Update\nBob Waters and Richard Nickerson are continuing to address important restoration needs on the Casavant organ in the Museum’s Mary Keane Chapel. This fall and winter they removed and completely rebuilt the wind chest that receives and regulates the air pressure produced by the organ’s electric blower. This included replacing all the original leather work that controls the release of air to the organ pipes. In addition to maintaining the organ’s tuning\, they have been repairing coupling mechanisms that have failed. Unfortunately the Casavant company no longer makes certain replacement parts\, so some aspects of the restoration work requires creative problem solving. We are fortunate to\nhave two craftsmen\, well versed in the intricacies of Casavant organ construction\, caring for this precious instrument. \nThank you for your support of their ongoing restoration work.

DESCRIPTION:Hand Papermaking with Plants\nSunday August 24th\, 2025\n10:00 am – 1:30 pm\nEnfield Shaker Museum Herb Garden \n447 NH Route 4A \nEnfield\, NH 03748 \nJoin local artist Emma Percy for a day making paper in the herb garden! People have been using plant fibers to make paper for nearly 2\,000 years\, and in the present day the practice offers endless possibilities as a creative and artistic medium. This class will go through the traditional western-style papermaking process step-by-step: understanding different types of fiber and where they come from\, processing the plants and making pulp\, forming sheets\, adding decorative inclusions from in and around the garden\, and pressing and drying the sheets. Everyone will make several pieces of paper to use for their own art and craft projects\, for writing letters\, or simply to appreciate as art in its own right. You’ll also learn some strategies for making paper at home in a relatively small space without the need for much specialized equipment! \n \n*Please wear clothes and shoes you don’t mind getting wet\, and be mindful of the weather for this outdoor workshop. We will have pop-up tents for light rain\, and have an indoor location if it is too wet or stormy outside. \nLearn more about Emma Percy: \nEmma Percy (they/them) is an artist\, community herbalist\, and educator from Buffalo\, NY\, now based in the Upper Valley of VT & NH. Participants will work individually and together on several small pieces\, designed to develop colorwork skills and best practices. Once learned\, you will apply these skills to create a knitted item of your choice\, ranging from simple to complex. The instructor has designed several colorwork charts with Shaker-inspired motifs that can be incorporated into your project. You will receive the full collection of these knitting charts during the workshop\, so you can continue your colorwork at home and integrate the motifs in future projects. This workshop is a great opportunity to get an early start on knitted gifts for the holidays. \nIn the workshop\, you will learn: \n\nHow to select the right yarn for your colorwork projects\, including advantages and disadvantages of different yarns\nHow to apply color theory when selecting colors for your projects\nFive different types of colorwork: stranded (including Fair Isle)\, intarsia\, duplicate stitch\, and two ways to create striping\nDifferent styles of knitting and tools that can be used for colorwork; including ways to adjust and maintain tension to create high quality fabrics; and working flat and in the round\nDesign considerations for colorwork\nHow to read and work with colorwork charts\nStrategies for managing your yarn: to reduce twists and tangles; working with floats; and transitioning between different colors horizontally and vertically\nMany tips and tricks throughout the day as well as cameos about Shaker fiber art and crafts.\n\n  \nWorkshop participants will need to bring their own knitting needles and other tools (scissors\, etc.) and pay the materials fee in advance. She has taught\, studied and worked with organizations and learning communities for over thirty-seven years. She is a skilled facilitator\, consultant\, coach\, teacher and graphic recorder and has a wonderful way of interweaving these different abilities in her work with clients and other artists. She has traveled to many countries around the world\, leading projects\, giving presentations at conferences\, designing learning experiences and consulting with a variety of organizations and communities. \nShe first started playing with fiber when she was five years old. She learned how to knit and sew from her mother and grandmother\, and occasionally from her older sister. They were strong role models and a constant source of inspiration\, demonstrating over and over the incredible things one could create with one’s own hands. She started adapting knitting patterns as a teenager and creating her own knitting\, sewing and other designs when she was in her early twenties. She has played with many different disciplines in the realm of fiber arts: knitting\, crochet\, beading/wire working\, sewing\, surface design\, origami\, and visible mending to name a few. DESCRIPTION:Turkey Wing Whisk Broom Workshop\nSunday\, October 5\, 2025\n10:00 am – 4:00 pm\nDuring the 19th century\, the Enfield Shakers produced as many as “2000 dozen” brooms per year. Begun at Watervliet\, New York community\, in 1798\, the Shaker broom industry quickly became one of the most important industries for Shaker communities across the country. Brooms can also be seen as a symbol of an important Shaker ideal. Cleanliness was a spiritual and moral imperative. When Mother Ann Lee told her followers\, “Sweep clean\,” she was referring not only to the floor of the home\, but also the floor of the heart. \n \nJoin our resident broom squire Larry Antonuk for a Turkey Wing Whisk Broom Workshop. Begin by learning to make a simple bundle whisk broom\, including the knots and materials used to make all brooms. After you master the skills necessary to use a “tumble spool”\, you will move on to the more challenging turkey wing whisk broom. \nThese traditional\, functional\, high quality and long lasting brooms are made from natural broom corn. \nThis Turkey Wing Whisk Broom workshop takes place in the historic  Great Stone Dwelling dining room. He has researched and reproduced a variety of Shaker designs\, and now sells his work in our Gift Shop. He will be visiting with a group of students and professors from Richmond University\, who will be analyzing various archaeological sites at the museum. Matthew is bringing some of his findings to talk about a Shaker community in New York. \nIn this presentation\, I revisit the interpretations from mitigation excavations in the Town of Colonie\, Albany County conducted in 2017 at the site of the original Shaker community in New York. The archeological evidence of a late 18th to early 19th-century structure located on the West Family farmstead of the Watervliet Shaker Community provides an opportunity to explore Shaker tobacco pipes and their cultural and religious significance for community members.  Smoking was common for both male and female members until the practice was banned in the 1850s. \n \nCost: \nNo admission cost\, but advanced registration required. \nComing from a distance? DESCRIPTION:Hike to Smith Pond\nwith Upper Valley Land Trust\nSaturday\, October 18th\, 2025\n9:30 am – 1:00 pm\n*No Admission Fee*\n*There is no fee to join\, but registration is required! \nTake a hike to Smith Pond with UVLT and ESM! Smith Pond Shaker Forest consists of 995 acres of forest and wetlands in Enfield located between two State Wildlife Management Areas. The three properties combine to provide thousands of acres of significant wildlife habitat. UVLT’s property boasts two waterfalls\, numerous articles from Shaker History including spillways\, dams\, canals\, and stone walls\, and the beautiful Smith Pond with serene and scenic views. \nIn the 1830s\, the Shakers dammed several ponds\, creating “Shaker Mountain Pond”\, and developed a system of canals to deliver water to their community near Lake Mascoma. Today you can still find remnants of their through this forest\, such as gate posts and canals that led to Enfield Shaker Village. Hikers will gather at the Great Stone Dwelling at 9:30 am for a brief introduction and get underway about 10:00 am. The route will follow the Upper Valley Land Trust trail with a side spur to the waterfall. Although the hike is of moderate difficulty\, those who wished can follow along the canal (gentle grade) and turn back when the hike gets too steep. \nPlease wear weather appropriate clothing and sturdy shoes/boots. Plan to bring a bag lunch and beverage for a picnic along the way. This hike will provide excellent opportunities for photography. \nWe will meet at the head of the trail starting at 9:30am to prepare for the hike and get introductions underway. Less than a mile south from the Enfield Shaker Museum on Route 4A there is a parking lot for the Smith Pond Trail. DESCRIPTION:Talk Smith Pond with\nUpper Valley Land Trust\nFriday\, October 24th\, 2025\n6:00 – 7:00 pm\n*No admission fee*\nGreat Stone Dwelling – Meeting Room on the 2nd Floor \nThis event is a follow-up to the “Hike to Smith Pond” on October 18th\, 2025. It was a limited group that was able to participate and both institutions want to make sure there is equal access. If you were unable to hike with us\, or if you missed it altogether\, this is the opportunity to listen in to the history and environmental practices happening on this site now. There will be current pictures from the hike to showcase\, as well as first hand anecdotes from UVLT and ESM staff members. \nSmith Pond Shaker Forest consists of 995 acres of forest and wetlands in Enfield located between two State Wildlife Management Areas. The three properties combine to provide thousands of acres of significant wildlife habitat. UVLT’s property boasts two waterfalls\, numerous articles from Shaker History including spillways\, dams\, canals\, and stone walls\, and the beautiful Smith Pond with serene and scenic views. \nIn the 1830s\, the Shakers dammed several ponds\, creating “Shaker Mountain Pond”\, and developed a system of canals to deliver water to their community near Lake Mascoma. Thank you for your understanding.\nRegular tea practice can be an important part of bringing your best self to all you do – whether with a bracing cup of English Breakfast to help you start the day or a soothing herbal infusion to wind down in the afternoon. This course is for the longtime tea-drinker who wants to learn how to elevate their experience and for the tea novice who likes the idea of the comfort and energy available in a cuppa. We will learn the steps of expert-level brewing and you will leave with skills that you can continue to use with your choice of tea leaves or your favorite bagged teas. \nWho is Kate Hesser?\nKate Malone Hesser is a Certified Tea Sommelier Professional through the Tea Academy of Canada and a graduate of the Being Tea tea educators program.  While a lifelong tea drinker\, Kate began her tea journey in earnest to help face some health struggles and to create solace for herself and family during the longest days of the pandemic. Kate enjoys sharing tea with friends\, new and old\, family\, and colleagues at Dartmouth Advancement\, where she has worked for 15 years. DESCRIPTION:Elevate Your Knitting with Texture\nwith Katrina Geurkink\nSaturday\, November 1st\, 2025\n9:00 am – 5:00 pm\nTHIS WORKSHOP HAS BEEN CANCELLED. THANK YOU FOR YOUR UNDERSTANDING.\nShaker arts and crafts are known for striking\, innovative\, and functional designs. Textured knitting shares these qualities. It can be used to create beautiful\, intriguing fabric with a range of performance features like stretch\, breathability\, durability\, moisture wicking and extra warmth. And your knitting doesn’t have to be complicated to create stunning\, textured pieces. It can be as simple as combining knit and purl stitches in unique ways; or employing increases and decreases in repetitive patterns that take your knitting to the next level. In this workshop we will explore a range of knitting stitches and techniques. Most are easy to learn and they all produce fabrics full of beautiful texture. We will begin with work on small pieces\, designed to develop skills and best practices. Once learned\, you will apply these skills to create a knitted item of your choice. The instructor has designed several textured knitting charts that can be incorporated into your project. You will receive the full collection of knitting charts during the workshop\, so you can continue developing your textured knitting skills at home and integrate the charts and stitches into future projects. This workshop is a great opportunity to get an early start on knitted gifts for the holidays. \nIn the workshop\, you will learn: \n\nDesign considerations for textured knitting: how to select the right yarn\, needles and color for your texture projects\, including advantages and disadvantages of different choices\nDifferent techniques to create texture in your knitting\, including: knit/purl combinations\, assigned pooling\, lace\, combining different fibers\, and simple cables\nCombining more than one texture in a project\nKnitting “rhythms” and how they can be used to increase accuracy and reduce “tinking” and “frogging”\nHow to read and work with textured knitting charts\nMany tips and tricks throughout the day as well as cameos about Shaker fiber art and crafts.\n\n  \nWorkshop participants will need to bring their own knitting needles and other tools (scissors\, etc.) and pay the materials fee in advance. This fee covers all the texture charts\, yarn\, some supplies and handouts for the workshop. Participants will have the option to purchase additional yarn\, texture patterns\, tools and other supplies on the day of the workshop. \n  \nSkill Level: Basic – Intermediate. You do not need textured knitting skills/experience to attend this workshop\, but you should have basic to intermediate knitting skills\, and enthusiasm and patience for learning new knitting techniques. \n  \nCost: \n$75.00 to register for the workshop\, plus the materials fee $35. Due at the time of registration. \nPlease bring your own lunch. Water and light refreshment will be provided. \n  \nYou will receive more information (including a detailed list of what to bring) via email when you register and pay for the workshop. \n  \nWho Is Katrina Geurkink? \nKatrina is a consultant\, designer and fiber artist living in Lebanon\, NH. She has taught\, studied and worked with organizations and learning communities for over thirty-seven years. She is a skilled facilitator\, consultant\, coach\, teacher and graphic recorder and has a wonderful way of interweaving these different abilities in her work with clients and other artists. She has traveled to many countries around the world\, leading projects\, giving presentations at conferences\, designing learning experiences and consulting with a variety of organizations and communities. \nShe first started playing with fiber when she was five years old. She learned how to knit and sew from her mother and grandmother\, and occasionally from her older sister. They were strong role models and a constant source of inspiration\, demonstrating over and over the incredible things one can create with one’s own hands. She started adapting knitting patterns as a teenager and creating her own knitting\, sewing and other designs when she was in her early twenties. She has played with many different disciplines in the realm of fiber arts: knitting\, crochet\, beading/wire working\, sewing\, surface design\, origami\, and visible mending to name a few. DESCRIPTION:Pantry Basket Workshop\nwith Dona Nazarenko\nSaturday\, November 1st\, 2025\n9:00 – 4:00pm\nJoin us in the Great Stone Dwelling dining room for a full day workshop! Add a modern twist to a traditional Shaker Pantry Basket in this hands-on workshop. Shaker sisters once wove pantry baskets so large they required two people to carry them—but today’s design offers both history and utility. This basket includes a woven side pocket\, perfect for extra tools\, garden supplies\, BBQ essentials\, or crafting materials. Participants will use natural round and flat reed\, paired with a tall oak handle\, and can choose to add color accents if desired. We’ll even decorate the top of the handle for a personal touch. Beginners will have the option to finish their rim work at home. \nWho is Doña Nazerenko? \nResiding in Tunbridge\, Vermont\, Doña Nazarenko has been weaving since 1988 and teaching since 1994. While living along the New Jersey coast\, Doña developed an interest in woodcrafts and related art forms that developed into her desire to take basket making classes in 1988. \nHer exploration of a different art medium has since evolved into a flourishing talent. She now enjoys making traditional baskets using reed with wooden accents to more challenging baskets using birch bark from the area surrounding her current residence in rural Vermont. \nThe highlight of the early years at her craft was having a one-on-one critique with John McGuire at Peter’s Gallery in 1992. His confidence in her and his discretion continues to help her with her current work. Today she can be seen demonstrating basketry representing Vermont fiber artists at local and out-of-state events. \n*Please bring your own lunch. SUMMARY:Feather Wool Tree Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Feather Wool Tree Workshop\nwith Jean Reed\nSunday\, November 2nd\, 2025\n9:00 am – 4:00 pm\nThese unique and whimsical trees are made from felted wool\, wrapped over wire stems\, and are enhanced with winter berries.  You will be using 100% felted wool and have a choice of colors.  Trees made in class are 18” tall and your kit includes a tree stand. \nFelted wool trees are not just for the Christmas or winter holidays but can also be done in colors that allow it to be an Easter tree or a tree for a baby shower. Your tree will measure 18” tall.  Embellishments such as lighting and ornaments are available. \nStudents should bring sharp fabric scissors (small ones\, such as embroidery scissors are great)\, a tape measure and a pencil.  Don’t forget a brown bag lunch and a good sense of humor. There will be a brief lunch break during the workshop.
