DESCRIPTION:Elevate Your Knitting with Texture\nwith Katrina Geurkink\nSaturday\, November 1st\, 2025\n9:00 am – 5:00 pm\nTHIS WORKSHOP HAS BEEN CANCELLED. THANK YOU FOR YOUR UNDERSTANDING.\nShaker arts and crafts are known for striking\, innovative\, and functional designs. Textured knitting shares these qualities. It can be used to create beautiful\, intriguing fabric with a range of performance features like stretch\, breathability\, durability\, moisture wicking and extra warmth. And your knitting doesn’t have to be complicated to create stunning\, textured pieces. It can be as simple as combining knit and purl stitches in unique ways; or employing increases and decreases in repetitive patterns that take your knitting to the next level. In this workshop we will explore a range of knitting stitches and techniques. Most are easy to learn and they all produce fabrics full of beautiful texture. We will begin with work on small pieces\, designed to develop skills and best practices. Once learned\, you will apply these skills to create a knitted item of your choice. The instructor has designed several textured knitting charts that can be incorporated into your project. You will receive the full collection of knitting charts during the workshop\, so you can continue developing your textured knitting skills at home and integrate the charts and stitches into future projects. This workshop is a great opportunity to get an early start on knitted gifts for the holidays. \nIn the workshop\, you will learn: \n\nDesign considerations for textured knitting: how to select the right yarn\, needles and color for your texture projects\, including advantages and disadvantages of different choices\nDifferent techniques to create texture in your knitting\, including: knit/purl combinations\, assigned pooling\, lace\, combining different fibers\, and simple cables\nCombining more than one texture in a project\nKnitting “rhythms” and how they can be used to increase accuracy and reduce “tinking” and “frogging”\nHow to read and work with textured knitting charts\nMany tips and tricks throughout the day as well as cameos about Shaker fiber art and crafts.\n\n  \nWorkshop participants will need to bring their own knitting needles and other tools (scissors\, etc.) and pay the materials fee in advance. This fee covers all the texture charts\, yarn\, some supplies and handouts for the workshop. Participants will have the option to purchase additional yarn\, texture patterns\, tools and other supplies on the day of the workshop. \n  \nSkill Level: Basic – Intermediate. You do not need textured knitting skills/experience to attend this workshop\, but you should have basic to intermediate knitting skills\, and enthusiasm and patience for learning new knitting techniques. \n  \nCost: \n$75.00 to register for the workshop\, plus the materials fee $35. Due at the time of registration. \nPlease bring your own lunch. Water and light refreshment will be provided. \n  \nYou will receive more information (including a detailed list of what to bring) via email when you register and pay for the workshop. \n  \nWho Is Katrina Geurkink? \nKatrina is a consultant\, designer and fiber artist living in Lebanon\, NH. She has taught\, studied and worked with organizations and learning communities for over thirty-seven years. She is a skilled facilitator\, consultant\, coach\, teacher and graphic recorder and has a wonderful way of interweaving these different abilities in her work with clients and other artists. She has traveled to many countries around the world\, leading projects\, giving presentations at conferences\, designing learning experiences and consulting with a variety of organizations and communities. \nShe first started playing with fiber when she was five years old. She learned how to knit and sew from her mother and grandmother\, and occasionally from her older sister. They were strong role models and a constant source of inspiration\, demonstrating over and over the incredible things one can create with one’s own hands. She started adapting knitting patterns as a teenager and creating her own knitting\, sewing and other designs when she was in her early twenties. She has played with many different disciplines in the realm of fiber arts: knitting\, crochet\, beading/wire working\, sewing\, surface design\, origami\, and visible mending to name a few. DESCRIPTION:Pantry Basket Workshop\nwith Dona Nazarenko\nSaturday\, November 1st\, 2025\n9:00 – 4:00pm\nJoin us in the Great Stone Dwelling dining room for a full day workshop! Add a modern twist to a traditional Shaker Pantry Basket in this hands-on workshop. Shaker sisters once wove pantry baskets so large they required two people to carry them—but today’s design offers both history and utility. This basket includes a woven side pocket\, perfect for extra tools\, garden supplies\, BBQ essentials\, or crafting materials. Participants will use natural round and flat reed\, paired with a tall oak handle\, and can choose to add color accents if desired. We’ll even decorate the top of the handle for a personal touch. Beginners will have the option to finish their rim work at home. \nWho is Doña Nazerenko? \nResiding in Tunbridge\, Vermont\, Doña Nazarenko has been weaving since 1988 and teaching since 1994. While living along the New Jersey coast\, Doña developed an interest in woodcrafts and related art forms that developed into her desire to take basket making classes in 1988. \nHer exploration of a different art medium has since evolved into a flourishing talent. She now enjoys making traditional baskets using reed with wooden accents to more challenging baskets using birch bark from the area surrounding her current residence in rural Vermont. \nThe highlight of the early years at her craft was having a one-on-one critique with John McGuire at Peter’s Gallery in 1992. His confidence in her and his discretion continues to help her with her current work. Today she can be seen demonstrating basketry representing Vermont fiber artists at local and out-of-state events. \n*Please bring your own lunch. DESCRIPTION:Feather Wool Tree Workshop\nwith Jean Reed\nSunday\, November 2nd\, 2025\n9:00 am – 4:00 pm\nThese unique and whimsical trees are made from felted wool\, wrapped over wire stems\, and are enhanced with winter berries.  You will be using 100% felted wool and have a choice of colors.  Trees made in class are 18” tall and your kit includes a tree stand. \nFelted wool trees are not just for the Christmas or winter holidays but can also be done in colors that allow it to be an Easter tree or a tree for a baby shower. Your tree will measure 18” tall.  Embellishments such as lighting and ornaments are available. \nStudents should bring sharp fabric scissors (small ones\, such as embroidery scissors are great)\, a tape measure and a pencil.  Don’t forget a brown bag lunch and a good sense of humor. There will be a brief lunch break during the workshop. The meeting will kick off with board and staff introductions followed by a special presentation by Andrew Cushing of Mascoma Valley Preservation. Andrew Cushing leads the regional nonprofit\, Mascoma Valley Preservation. Prior to that\, he worked for the NH Preservation Alliance and Bureau of Historic Sites at NH State Parks. He has visited every town in New Hampshire\, authored 88 historic register nominations\, and co-authored over 20 historic building assessments. He has seen a lot of schoolhouse museums. But today’s society is more diverse\, polarized\, and arguably inattentive. DESCRIPTION:History of Fiber Arts in NH:\nA Lecture by Patty Williams\nFriday\, November 14th\, 2025\n6:00 – 7:00pm\nTHIS LECTURE HAS BEEN CANCELLED. Thank you for your understanding.\nLocal fiber farmer and fiber artist Patty Williams grew up in New Hampshire\, the fiber arts\, and farming. In this lecture she will combine all three taking us on a tour of time from earliest known techniques\, fibers used\, and fiber in New Hampshire today. Patty is known for throwing in juicy tidbits of fun facts. What famous people wore Londonderry Linen? The New Hampshire Sheep Craze? And the Shaker’s did what? She will answer all of these and more. \nQuestions to follow the presentation. \nWho is Patty Williams? \nPatty Williams is the owner of Aker Fiber Farm located in Enfield Center\, NH. She began working with fiber arts as a young girl with her aunt and mom in Walpole\, NH. She learned how to crochet\, wash fleeces\, draft\, or treadle\, and card wool along with tying her shoes. She began Aker Fiber Farm part time after leaving the Army with her husband in Virginia. They then purchased the flock that had been supplying their fleeces and moved everyone to New Hampshire where Patty added Shepherd to her resume. Aker Fiber Farm has evolved into a Farm to Yarn Company providing flax to linen and fleece to yarn to customers all over the US and Canada.\nPatty began teaching fiber arts without even realizing that was what she was doing. Always wanting to share her passion\, she taught friends how to crochet and knit while in grade school and continued as she gathered more skills and moved around the country. Today\, she travels up and down the east coast teaching workshops and giving lectures on Shepherding skills\, flax\, linen\, spinning\, fiber prep\, dyeing\, and knitting. Her favorite students are folks that “never thought they could”\, as Patty believes everyone CAN!\nAdvanced Registration Required. Please RSVP by November 11th\, 2025. During this introductory class you will learn to cut the set of 3 stencils you will use to stencil oil paint on cotton velveteen to create the pretty morning glories pictured.  \nAlmost everything you will need to complete this project will be provided for you except; please bring an exacto knife with #11 blades and you will want a 5×7 frame for your finished Theorem. DESCRIPTION:This is a workshop open to all\, with no previous writing experience required. Just bring writing implements — pencils\, notebook\, computer (with clicks on silent!) — and the desire to tell a story from your own personal experience.The goal of this workshop is to venture into our trove of personal stories and free up our voices to write about deeply remembered & felt experiences. Preliminary exercises like prompt writing and clustering ideas & images will fire up our memory and imagination before we settle into a period of silent writing. Without expecting to come away with a finished piece — though that could definitely happen! — participants will get the creative juices flowing to generate new ideas and approaches to their work. All of us will leave eager to continue writing\, whether to further explore a new idea\, continue on work already in progress\, or clarify personal writing goals. \nThis January\, she invites participants of all levels to explore memory\, craft meaningful narratives\, and discover the stories only they can tell. Join us for an inspiring afternoon of writing\, reflection\, and expert guidance. \nClyde Watson: \nAuthor Clyde Watson is best known for her award-winning children’s books\, including Father Fox’s Pennyrhymes\, which was a National Book Award runner-up. She is also the composer of the original music that appears in three of her books. Her adult poetry has appeared in Pastoral Magazine and in several anthologies. She has written scripts for several theater groups\, including The Christmas Revels and the Summer Revels. Watson is the editor of Waterfront New York: Images of the 1920s & ‘30s\, written and illustrated by Aldren A. Watson\, published by The Quantuck Lane Press in November 2014. SUMMARY:Heart-Shaped Basket Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Create something lovely and useful just in time for Valentine’s season in this heart-shaped basket weaving workshop with local basket maker Lorraine Flye on Saturday\, February 7\, 2026 in the Great Stone Dwelling. Lorraine will guide participants step-by-step through the process of shaping\, weaving\, and finishing a charming heart basket—perfect for gifting\, hanging on a wall\, or filling with special keepsakes. Lorraine will have pink and purple color options for each participant to choose from to make their center weave unique. \n \nNo prior basket weaving experience is necessary; beginners and seasoned makers alike are welcome. All necessary materials and tools will be provided\, and each participant will leave with a completed heart-shaped basket and the skills to create more at home. The minimum age is 14 years old. \nLorraine Flye: \nLorraine Flye is a lifelong maker with more than 30 years of basket-weaving experience and a passion for sharing traditional craft with learners of all ages. A new Enfield resident as of April 2025\, Lorraine quickly became an integral part of the Enfield Shaker Museum community as a volunteer gardener in the Shaker Herb Gardens and as one of the museum’s basket-weaving demonstrators throughout the summer season. Enfield Shaker Museum will be offering a Q&A session with museum curator Michael O’Connor and Shaker scholar Mary Ann Haagen post credits. \nTestament of Ann Lee Trailer \nAs a founder of the Shaker movement\, Ann Lee (Amanda Seyfried) was one of the most important religious figures in pre-Revolutionary America. With her powerful third feature\, Mona Fastvold (co-writer of The Brutalist) digs deep into Lee’s story\, especially the profound childhood and early adult traumas that impacted her psychology and shaped her influential religious views. \nLee’s tragic loss of all her children in infancy or early childhood\, along with her radically unique interpretation of scripture\, transformed her into a fierce advocate for a more equitable and utopian society. SUMMARY:Shaker Music and Dance Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This workshop offers an opportunity to explore Shaker spirituals\, dance and marching in the Shaker Meeting Room of the museum’s Great Stone Dwelling. \nNo previous experience necessary. Bring comfortable shoes.  \nThe workshop will be taught by Mary Ann Haagen\, Shaker scholar\, museum volunteer and Dartmouth Music Department resident scholar. \nSuggested donation $15. \n(Inclement weather date\, Sunday\, March 1\, 1 to 4 pm.) \nMany persons are curious as to the reason for using dancing or marching\, in our earlier religious services. It is amazing how much sound reason is behind the thinking of the early Shaker leaders\, and how much psychology was employed. \nIt was the belief of the Shakers that every faculty should be used in the worship of God\, and so\, various forms of physical exercise were introduced\, particularly the March. A group of eight or ten singers\, occupied the center of the room\, around which the members marched in perfect formation. It was with a graceful\, rhythmic motion of the hands as the members marched to the slow or quick tempo of the music. \nDancing\, or the March\, was not such a strange occurrence during a religious service of the early days of the Church. We have mention\, in the Old Testament\, of David and Miriam dancing before the Lord. Also there are 19 instances where dancing is mentioned in the Mosaic Law. \nThere was also a definite psychological purpose behind the Shaker marches\, seldom explained\, and rarely understood by the general Public. The perfect rhythmic body motions\, of a worshipper\, who combined this activity with a deep mental and religious fervor\, developed within himself\, a great spiritual inspiration\, almost impossible to understand or describe\, by one who has never witnessed or participated in this form of worship. But if one could have been present\, as I was\, and could have seen the perfect spiritual union that was produced when a soul combined the physical motions\, the singing voice and the dedicated heart\, in giving praise and thanks to God—I’m sure you would have agreed that the physical motions added a still greater dimension to the expression of Prayer. However\, as years passed\, and older members were unable to join in these marches\, the exercises were discontinued\, as it was considered necessary to maintain a perfect union among the members\, a service in which all may participate as One. \n~Sister Lillian Phelps\, Canterbury\, New Hampshire

Using a mini frame loom and a variety of yarns and fibers such as wool roving\, silk\, and wool locks\, you will learn how to weave patterns and textures to evoke the mossy magic of the forest floor\, all set up on a wooden box frame so your weaving is ready to hang at the end of the session. The workshop will cover four different weaving techniques to bring your moss textile to life! \nMaterial fee: $10 \n \nInstructor Bio: \nMallory Zondag is a mixed-media fiber artist and artist educator. Her experience with textiles while in art school led her to create both independent and community sculpture through a variety of fiber art mediums. She explores deeply personal and connective universal stories through the meditative and hands-on practices of wet felting\, weaving\, sculpting\, and stitching\, seeking to bring the ephemeral into physical being.  The growth and decay of the natural world\, the duality of discomfort and attraction we feel towards it\, and humanity’s place within this dichotomy informs her dimensional textures and sculptural pieces. \n\nEmbroidery Flowers with June Albright\nAn embroidery workshop is a relaxing and creative experience where participants learn to create designs on fabric. Using embroidery techniques\, they will decorate linen tea towels with intricate designs\, inspired by spring flowers. Once the embroidery is complete\, the towels are yours to keep and use as decor or functional. The workshop provides a calm and enjoyable atmosphere\, allowing participants to relax while learning a new craft and leaving with a beautifully handmade item that carries both personal creativity and potential a desire to make more. \n\n \nInstructor Bio: \nJune Albright learned to embroider as a child\, taught by her grandmother. For the past 30 years\, she has enjoyed teaching embroidery at the Upper Valley Waldorf School to grade school students. June teaches embroidery\, mainly to adults\, at Craft Studies in White River Junction. \nShe has enjoyed furthering her skills at the San Francisco School of Needlework and Design and the Royal School of Needlework in London.\nFingerless Fair Isle Mittens with Donna Kay\nGloves and mittens are still hand knit in Shetland today. These traditional accessories combine the elements of color and patterning in unique ways. Students will work on a pair of fingerless mitts using their choice of colors of Shetland wool. We will cover tangle-free stranded knitting\, techniques for holding yarns in one or both hands\, chart reading\, thumbs and blocking. You will not be able to knit just one pair! \nMaterial fee: $25 – yarn\, pattern\, folder\, handouts \n \nInstructor Bio: \nDonna Kay is a knitting instructor and designer as well as an accomplished hand spinner. You will learn how to apply merino wool roving\, silks\, silk fibers\, yarns\, and other materials like silk cocoons\, wool nepps and recycled fabrics to a piece of silk chiffon and through the ancient art of wet felting\, fuse all the elements into a cohesive textile. These shawls can be worn\, stitched into decorative pillows or bags\, used as wall hangings\, the only limit is your imagination! \nMaterial fee: $20 \n \nInstructor Bio: \nMallory Zondag is a mixed-media fiber artist and artist educator. These little gems are woven with hand pounded brown ash and embellished with ribbon. \nMaterial fee: $40 \n \nInstructor Bio: \nJean Reed – Murray Hill Weaving is Jean Reed’s dream come true – resulting from her love of basketry\, and weaving for over 45 years. \nBasketry classes took a natural turn into chair seating and other types of art which include a variety of children’s workshops. Located at 685 Murray Hill Road\, Hill\, NH\, the heart of New Hampshire\, Jean teaches in her shop\, and art studios around the country. \nShe has taught for the NH League of Craftsmen\, as well conventions in Michigan\, North Carolina\, Kentucky\, Stowe Basket Festival and Northeast Basketmakers Guild. In addition\, she is a member of BAG\, a local group of artists called Book Artist Group. \nKnit a Shaker Dishcloth with Carolyn Smith\n“A History of Hand Knitting” by Richard Rutt\, describes a dishcloth knit by the 19th century Shakers “The washcloths were circular\, made of 16 segments of garter stitch\, arranged in alternating colours. The rows ran radially\, decreasing from the centre in alternate shortened rows.” These dishcloths were knit on Size 0 knitting needles using very fine cotton thread\, several of these dishcloths can be found in museum collections today. In this class you will learn to knit a modern version of this historic textile. We will be working with Size 2 (or larger) needles and sport weight cotton yarn. All materials and patterns will be provided. This project is perfect for intermediate beginner knitters.\n \nInstructor Bio: \nCarolyn Smith\, a self-taught knitter\, has decades of experience knitting\, teaching knitting\, and loving yarn of all kinds. She is currently Acting-Director at Enfield Shaker Museum and has long been interested in how the Shakers used and produced textiles. \nEmbroidery on Knitting with Katrina Geurkink\nJoin other knitting enthusiasts and step into the “world of knitting embellishment”. We will spend four hours learning how to use handmade\, knitted fabric as a canvas for embroidery. Participants will work on small pieces\, designed to develop embroidery skills that work well with knitted fabrics. Once learned\, you will apply these skills to create an embroidered handknit item from a selection of unique knitting patterns and embroidery motifs designed by the instructor. You will receive a copy of the pattern you select\, as well as the full set of embroidery motifs\, so you can continue adding embroidery to your handmade knits at home. \nMaterial fee: $35 \n \nInstructor Bio: \nKatrina Geurkink is a consultant\, designer and fiber artist living in Lebanon\, NH. She has taught\, studied and worked with organizations and learning communities for over thirty-seven years.  She is a skilled facilitator\, consultant\, coach\, teacher and graphic recorder and has a wonderful way of interweaving these different abilities in her work with clients and other artists.  She has traveled to many countries around the world\, leading projects\, giving presentations at conferences\, designing learning experiences and consulting with a variety of organizations and communities. \nShe first started playing with fiber when she was five years old. She learned how to knit and sew from her mother and grandmother\, and occasionally from her older sister. They were strong role models and a constant source of inspiration\, demonstrating over and over the incredible things one could create with one’s own hands. She started adapting knitting patterns as a teenager and creating her own knitting\, sewing and other designs when she was in her early twenties. She has played with many different disciplines in the realm of fiber arts: knitting\, crochet\, beading/wire working\, sewing\, surface design\, origami\, and visible mending to name a few. She is an artist member at AVA Gallery and is currently developing online courses and a YouTube Channel to help a wider audience learn from demonstrations of fiber art and craft techniques. \nUpcycle a Favorite Old Garment with Meredith Smith\nGive new life to an old favorite—or a forgotten piece from the back of your closet—in this hands-on upcycling workshop. Participants will explore creative ways to transform existing garments through simple alterations\, embellishment\, and thoughtful redesign. Learn techniques for mending\, reshaping\, and repurposing fabric while embracing sustainability and personal style. Whether you’re refreshing a well-worn item or reinventing something you no longer wear\, this workshop celebrates creativity\, resourcefulness\, and the beauty of making something old feel new again. \n \nInstructor Bio: \nMeredith Smith holds a BFA and MAT from Rhode Island School of Design and did post graduate study in costume and theater design at Brown University. Her career includes costume designer\, jewelry designer\, college professor\, and owner/manager of a London based mail order clothing company. Meredith has been State Juried member of the League of NH Craftsmen for over 30 years\, focusing on one-of-a-kind clothing and soft sculpture and serving as a juror for League applicants. Currently\, Meredith heads the Open Fiber Arts Studio at AVA Gallery. She strives for excellence in craftsmanship in the Shaker tradition. \nReading Crochet Patterns with Rebekah Cardenas\nCrack the code of crochet patterns in this interactive workshop designed to make pattern reading simple\, clear\, and stress-free. Many crocheters find that written instructions feel like an entirely new language—but with the right guidance\, you’ll soon be reading them with confidence. In this session\, you’ll learn how to interpret crochet abbreviations\, understand common terminology\, and follow written step-by-step directions for basic crochet projects. \nYou’ll have the opportunity to ask questions\, get personalized feedback\, and even work through a pattern of your choice (optional\, but encouraged!) so you can apply what you learn directly to your own project. Whether you want to tackle your first written pattern or finally understand those tricky stitch sequences\, this workshop will give you the tools and know-how to move forward with ease. \n \nInstructor Bio: \nRebekah Cardenas says crocheting has been a heartfelt part of my life since age eight\, when my mother introduced me to the craft—a bond and tradition I still treasure today. We’ll explore how movement might help us focus\, create\, and bravely send our ideas into the world!  \nNo previous yoga experience is needed. Much of our practice will be done seated in chairs or stools. Modifications will be taught for those who wish to work from the floor or yoga mat.  \n \nInstructor Bio: \nSharon Comeau has been practicing yoga since 1999 and teaching since 2005. She started as an apprentice under Leslie Carleton’s fine tutelage\, and received certification from Yoga Alliance in 2010\, after studying with Deb Neubauer and Todd Norian. Sharon came to yoga from her interest in movement\, as an athlete and dancer for most of her life. She started with Bikram Yoga\, moved to the Upper Valley and in her yoga practice into vinyasa yoga\, and her teacher training was in Hatha Yoga\, focused on the Anusara School of Yoga. Known for her attention to detail\, kind teaching\, and heart-centered themes\, Sharon is pleased to welcome yogis of all traditions and levels into her classes. \nConnective Fibers: building community & visualizing our interconnected environment through fiber arts\nAn introduction to the artwork of Mallory Zondag\, her community art program Fiber Living Wall and how fiber art is a medium and craft that connects us to the land\, to history and to each other. \n \nPresenter Bio: \nMallory Zondag is a mixed-media fiber artist and artist educator. Her experience with textiles while in art school led her to create both independent and community sculpture through a variety of fiber art mediums. This immersive experience weaves together the grounding power of live drumming\, the soothing vibrations of sound healing\, and the calming energy of Reiki to support relaxation\, emotional balance\, and inner clarity. Together\, these practices create a peaceful space where you can slow down\, reconnect\, and simply be. \nThe steady rhythm of the drum has long been used across cultures to bring people together and guide the mind into a calmer\, more centered state. As the drumbeat fills the space\, you’ll be invited to step out of the busyness of everyday life and gently drop into your body and breath. The rhythm helps create a sense of presence and connection—both within yourself and with the group. \nAs the experience unfolds\, layers of sound healing tones and vibrations will help soothe the nervous system and guide you into a deeply meditative state. These resonant sounds can encourage relaxation\, quiet the mind\, and support a feeling of inner balance. Throughout the session\, Reiki energy will also be offered to support the body’s natural healing process\, helping to release tension\, restore energetic flow\, and promote a sense of peace and well-being. \nNo prior experience is necessary. This gathering is open to anyone seeking rest\, reflection\, and a deeper sense of harmony. Whether you are new to these practices or have experienced them before\, you are warmly welcome. \nPlease bring a cozy blanket or yoga mat for your comfort during the sound healing portion\, as well as a water bottle and a snack of your choice. If you have a drum or a rattle that you would like to play during the drumming portion\, you are encouraged to bring it along and join in the rhythm. The 2026 Spring Shaker Forum includes presentations by Shaker scholars\, special activities\, lodging and meals in the Great Stone Dwelling\, and networking with colleagues and friends. \nWe are honored to announce that Brother Arnold Hadd of the Sabbathday Lake Shaker community will be the keynote speaker at this year’s forum.  His subject will be Mother Ann Lee.  He will reflect on the centrality of her vision and teachings for Shakers past\, present and future.  Brother Arnold will speak at 7 pm on Friday\, April 17\, 2026. \nOn Saturday evening\, April 18th New York choreographer Reggie Wilson will discuss the impact of sacred movement traditions on his work. He is nationally and internationally recognized for creating dances that draw on the varied histories and spiritual practices of Africa and its diaspora. DESCRIPTION:Everybody’s Trash is an engaging and thought-provoking presentation by Duncan Watson\, author of the award-winning book Everyone’s Trash. Drawing on more than 33 years working in municipal waste management with the City of Keene\, Watson takes audiences behind the scenes of recycling\, refuse\, and the often unseen systems that shape our daily lives. \nBlending personal storytelling\, humor\, and practical insight\, Watson traces his journey from a childhood recycling attendant to a leader who helped build a nationally recognized waste management facility in southwestern New Hampshire. His talk explores the history and current realities of waste disposal in the United States while emphasizing the deeply human side of the work—highlighting the people\, values\, and community connections found even at the “dump.” \nMore than a technical discussion\, Everybody’s Trash is a reflection on civic responsibility and shared stewardship. Watson challenges audiences to rethink their relationship with waste\, demonstrating that ambitious goals—like diverting up to 80% of materials from landfills—are achievable without increasing costs. The presentation leaves listeners informed\, inspired\, and empowered to see waste not as an individual problem\, but as a collective opportunity for connection\, compassion\, and community action. \n\nWho is Duncan Watson? \nDuncan Watson grew up in Northern California but found his home in New England\, where he earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of New Hampshire and a master’s in Resource Management from Antioch University New England.
