SUMMARY:Enfield\, NH Shakers OSHER Course
DESCRIPTION:Enfield\, NH Shakers – OSHER Course\nA Peculiar People:\nThe Enfield\, N.H. Shakers\nMondays\, April 3 through May 8\, 2023\n12:30 pm – 2:30 pm\nSpring Term HyFlex (In-Person and by Zoom) OSHER Course with field trip\nThe Enfield\, NH Shakers considered themselves “A Peculiar People\,” whose faith required that they lived in a close-knit\, highly structured community of Believers. The tenets of their faith–the dual nature of God\, gender and racial equality\, community of property\, pacifism\, stewardship–challenged many in the 19th century\, and offer opportunities for reflection now. \nAlthough the Shakers have left their mark on contemporary art and design\, in this course we will make greatest use of their contributions to American sacred music. Their songs will provide us access to theological principles that undergird and sustain Believers. Additionally\, we will explore the elements of their faith that brought them into conflict with their neighbors\, and limited their ability to attract new converts to their way of life. \nThe Enfield\, NH Shakers – OSHER course will move quickly from a general overview of Shaker history to a detailed exploration of the Enfield and Canterbury communities’ contributions to New Hampshire’s religious and social history. \nThis OSHER Lifelong Learning at Dartmouth course is offered in conjunction with Enfield Shaker Museum and includes a site visit. \nCourse Instructor: Mary Ann Haagen \nShaker scholar\, musician\, and retired music teacher\, Mary Ann’s research focuses on the NH Shaker communities.  She lectures widely on Shaker history\, music\, and dance; has recorded three CDs of Shaker music with a vocal ensemble she directed. The group’s DVD\, We Find No Harm in Dancing\, documents their work with Shaker dance. Her articles on Shaker history appear regularly in historical publications.  The Collected Writings of Elder Henry Cumings\, edited by her is suggested reading and is  available in the Museum Gift Shop. \nCourse Fee: $65/person. To register call 603.646.0154 or http://reg130.imperisoft.com \nWant to know more about OSHER Life Long Learning at Dartmouth visit their website https://osher.dartmouth.edu

SUMMARY:Stocks and Soups from Scratch Demo & Lunch
DESCRIPTION:Sensational Stocks and Soups from Scratch\nCooking Demonstration & Luncheon\nSaturday\, March 25\, 2023\n10:00 am – 2:00 pm\nIf there’s one truth we know about the Shakers\, it’s that they understood all about sustainability and being a locavore long before the terms were hip or even invented!  There is no doubt they knew how to make sensational stocks and soups from scratch. \nThe Shakers were quite ingenious in the kitchen\, their inventions included a dough-kneading machine\, a water powered butter churn\, and a mechanical apple parer. \nAt a time when the typical American diet revolved around fatty preserved meats and starches\, the Shakers prepared simple\, wholesome food\, detested waste\, and were frugal with all their resources. \nMaking a decent stock is a “must-know” technique for all professional chefs. Join Chef Tony Rinella as he reveals the mystery behind creating robust and flavorful bone and vegetable broths\, and then teaches you how to build on the basics to create all kinds of different varieties of soups. \nDuring the cooking demonstration held in the Dining Room of the Great Stone Dwelling\, Chef Tony will create a savory French onion soup\, and a hearty winter minestrone soup. Immediately following the demonstration\, lunch will be served. \nGrab a friend and a spot in this flavorful event and learn to make Sensational Soups and Stocks from Scratch! \nLuncheon Menu:\nFrench Onion Soup or Hearty Minestrone \nHarvest Salad (mixed greens\, candied walnuts\, dried fruit\, Gorgonzola\, red onion\, & pomegranate balsamic vinaigrette) \nHomemade Focaccia bread \nBeer\, wine or cider of your choice \nBuy your tickets today!\nMuseum Members: $45/person \nNon-Members: $50/person \nWant to know more about Chef Tony Rinella?\nChef Tony Rinella received his culinary training from the United States Army. Once he completed his military training\, Tony returned to the Upper Valley of New Hampshire. Once there\, he began cooking at long standing area restaurants such as The Fort and Lou’s Restaurant and Bakery. \nAfter several years of learning from some talented and seasoned chefs\, Tony was given an opportunity to run his own kitchen. At the tender age of 23\, he managed both Firestones in Quechee\, VT and Bentley’s in Woodstock\, VT. Eventually he moved to Hingham\, MA and joined the team at Eat Well\, LLC\, a restaurant group located on the South Shore. \nUpon returning to the Upper Valley\, Tony accepted a position at The Lyme Inn in Lyme\, NH\, completely rebuilding their tavern and greatly increasing its success. He took the number of meals served from an average of seven per evening to regularly serving 250 people on a weekend evening. \nIn early 2016\, Tony and his wife Lisa started a meal delivery service called What’s For Dinner? For  two and a half years they fed between 40 and 45 families each week. \nTony has come full circle in his career and has returned to his roots! After a nearly four year stint as the Head Chef at The Public House in Quechee\, VT\, he accepted the Executive Chef position at Dr. Coburn’s Tonic in Woodstock\, VT\, where you can find his culinary creations today! \nTony lives in Enfield\, New Hampshire with his wife of seven years\, Lisa\, and their two daughters\, Charlotte Anne and Isla Grace.

SUMMARY:Square Foot Gardening Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Square Foot Gardening\nGardening 101 Workshop\nSaturday\, March 18\, 2023\n10:00 am – 12:00 pm\n  \nSquare Foot Gardening is a unique technique developed by Mel Bartholomew in 1975 that closely mirrors the Shakers’ affection for both simplicity and symmetry. For over three decades the Square Foot Gardening Foundation has spread Mel’s message of growing more food in less space with less waste. Just one 4 x 4 Square Foot Garden Box (16 square feet) will grow enough produce to make a salad for one adult every day of the growing season! This method of gardening is great for beginners and seasoned gardeners alike and can be done virtually anywhere with tangible results right away! \nJoin VT Master Gardener and Certified Square Foot Garden Instructor Nichole Wolfgang at Enfield Shaker Museum for a comprehensive Gardening 101 Workshop. Topics include different types of gardens (including Square Foot Gardening)\, the pros and cons of each\, general methods and examples of each variety. How to plan and set-up your garden; including soil\, size\, location\, and companion planting. What\, when and how to plant\, including guidance on climate zones\, seeds vs. plants\, and spacing. Watering\, weeding\, feeding and general care\, as well as how to harvest your crops will be covered. Learn everything you need to create the perfect garden for your home from start to harvest! \nThe Shakers and Gardening:\nMuch of daily life in a Shaker village revolved around farming and gardening. From growing food for their large self-sufficient communities\, to their seed business and the production of patent herbal medicines\, the Shakers had a deep reverence and connection to the earth.  \n\n\nA spiritual undertaking as much as a physical one\, the Shakers believed a garden was “an index of the owner’s mind” and that removing weeds from the garden was like removing impure thoughts from one’s mind\, keeping the tenet “cleanliness is next to godliness”. This meant\, like everything else in the village\, Shaker gardens were laid out in tightly packed\, neat and tidy rows\, creating a grid of intentionally placed plants which resulted in an abundant harvest. \n\n\nClass size limited to 25. Advance registration required. \nMuseum Members – $30/person \nNon-Members – $35/person \nMeet Nichole Wolfgang:\n\nNichole Wolfgang is a woman of many talents! She is a graduate of both Lehigh and Drexel Universities\, and served in the Peace Corps in Paraguay. In 2009 she received her Vermont Master Gardener Certification and became a Square Foot Gardening Certified Instructor in 2010. She considers herself a perpetual learner\, and has taught yoga\, watercolor painting\, book binding\, software use\, and of course gardening. In addition to home schooling her children she is a certified EMT and joined her local fire department! Nichole is also co-owner of Artesano Mead and KIS Kombucha\, two beverage companies located in Groton\, Vermont.

SUMMARY:Up-Cycled Sweater Mittens Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Sweaters are warm and cozy\, but they don’t last forever. Instead of throwing an old sweater out\, why not turn it into something new? Transform your favorite worn sweater into a pair of warm\, wearable mittens! The Up-Cycled Sweater Mittens Workshop will cover how to make a polished pair of fleece or flannel-lined cozy mittens. You are encouraged to use your own vintage sweater to make a pair of mittens(this project requires 1 sweater).  Thrift shops are great for finding seaters that are just begging to become colorful mittens. Once you register for the workshop you will receive instructions for felting the sweater you plan to use for the class. \nParticipants are asked to bring the following: \n\nSewing machine\nScissors\nPins\nThread\nFelted wool (wool sweaters that have been shrunk in a washing machine work best.)\nLining fabric (cashmere\, flannel)\nSomething for cuffs – sweater ribbed edges work well.\n\nWe will provide the patterns and refreshments! \nMuseum Members – $20.00   Non-Members – $25.00

SUMMARY:Oval Box Making Basics
DESCRIPTION:8:30 am – 4:00 pm \nJoin box maker Eric Pintar of the Home Shop to create one of the most iconic items of Shaker woodworking\, the oval box. Using carefully prepared thin strips of wood each participant will carve the “swallowtails” or “fingers” on one end before soaking them in a hot water bath to soften for bending. Copper tacks are installed to hold the oval hoop together before top and bottom boards are fit and held by wooden pegs. Each participant will construct 5 nesting oval boxes from cherry wood in this two day workshop. \nAll materials are included. No experience is required. \n
