DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nStorytime in the Garden\nwith the Enfield Public Library\nMonday\, August 3 @ 10 am\nRAIN LOCATION UPDATE  \n\nDue to the forecast for thunderstorms\, Monday’s Storytime at 10 am with the Enfield Public Library has been moved to the Ministry House: Children’s Playroom. Find us in the white building near the Museum Entrance\, right next to the Great Stone Dwelling.\n\n\nBring your raincoats! If the weather cooperates and the rain lets up after Storytime\, we’ll take a short walk over to the Children’s Garden to explore together. We can’t wait to see you!\n\n\nJoin us for a special outdoor Storytime in the Garden in partnership with the Enfield Public Library at the Enfield Shaker Museum Garden. \nOn Monday\, August 3 at 10:00 a.m.\, librarian Miss Kate will lead stories and songs for children under 5 and their caregivers in the beautiful surroundings of the Enfield Shaker Museum Children’s Garden. \nAfter storytime\, children will create a simple garden-themed ornament to take home\, then explore our new Touch\, See\, Smell Sensory Garden and Children’s Pollinator Garden\, where they can discover plants\, flowers\, and pollinators through hands-on exploration. \nThis event is free and open to the public\, and all families are welcome. We hope you’ll join us for a morning of stories\, creativity\, and garden fun! \nRestrooms: We have an outdoor porta potty at the garden and we will also have an indoor bathroom at the museum (about a 3 minute walk away) \nWater and Snacks: We will have water and apple slices available. DESCRIPTION:Everybody’s Trash is an engaging and thought-provoking presentation by Duncan Watson\, author of the award-winning book Everyone’s Trash. Drawing on more than 33 years working in municipal waste management with the City of Keene\, Watson takes audiences behind the scenes of recycling\, refuse\, and the often unseen systems that shape our daily lives. \nBlending personal storytelling\, humor\, and practical insight\, Watson traces his journey from a childhood recycling attendant to a leader who helped build a nationally recognized waste management facility in southwestern New Hampshire. His talk explores the history and current realities of waste disposal in the United States while emphasizing the deeply human side of the work—highlighting the people\, values\, and community connections found even at the “dump.” \nMore than a technical discussion\, Everybody’s Trash is a reflection on civic responsibility and shared stewardship. Watson challenges audiences to rethink their relationship with waste\, demonstrating that ambitious goals—like diverting up to 80% of materials from landfills—are achievable without increasing costs. The presentation leaves listeners informed\, inspired\, and empowered to see waste not as an individual problem\, but as a collective opportunity for connection\, compassion\, and community action. \nWho is Duncan Watson? \nDuncan Watson grew up in Northern California but found his home in New England\, where he earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of New Hampshire and a master’s in Resource Management from Antioch University New England. DESCRIPTION:Corbin’s Animal Garden with Mary Kroenenwetter\nWednesday\, April 9th\, 2025\n6:00 – 7:00 pm\nFree Admission\nEnfield Community Center \n308 US Route 4\n \nEnfield\, NH 03748 \nThe Enfield Public Library and Enfield Shaker Museum come together again to bring you a talk from Mary Kroenenwetter! This New Hampshire Humanities talk features a hunting club in central New Hampshire and the long history of its inhabitants. \nIn the late 1800s\, the banking\, railroad\, and real estate mogul Austin Corbin returned to his hometown in Newport\, New Hampshire. He built a grand estate and bought out his neighbors’ farms to create an 22\,000 acre wildlife game preserve stocked with boar\, bison\, bighorn sheep\, antelope\, elk\, Chinese pheasant\, and other imported animals. The grounds eventually became a prestigious private hunting park and hosted illustrious guests including Theodore Roosevelt\, the Prince of Wales\, Cornelius Vanderbilt\, Joe Dimaggio\, Rudyard Kipling\, and Augustus Saint Gaudens. This illustrated slideshow features archival images and a discussion of the complicated history and legacy of New Hampshire’s own American Gilded Age robber baron. The talk will also highlight the important legacy of the role the Corbin family and park naturalist Ernest Baynes played in the saving of the American bison from extinction. \nWho is Mary Kroenenwetter? \nMary Kronenwetter holds a doctorate in educational research\, policy\, and administration and has held academic administration and teaching positions at colleges in the United States\, China\, and Japan. Upon returning to New England\, she has worked at historical sites including Historic Deerfield\, Enfield Shaker Museum\, and The John Hay Estate at The Fells. Mary currently teaches for OSHER at Dartmouth and Adventures in Learning at Colby-Sawyer and has recently published the New Hampshire-based historical fiction\, Pauper Auction. \nThis program is made possible by New Hampshire Humanities.
