Community Moravian Star Making
Wednesday, December 13, 2023
1 – 4 pm
Help us make paper Moravian Stars to give away at our Community Carol Sing (to be held on December 23rd). Retired art teacher, Tracy Smith will lead a Community Moravian Star Making event. Experienced star makers and beginners alike will employ the magical art of paper folding used to create the multi-pointed stars used in Moravian communities to mark the Advent season.
These 3-D stars are made from 4 identical paper strips, and the technique is a combination of folding and weaving. They can be strung on a garland, looped individually to make ornaments or gift tags, or stopped at the halfway point to make a paper bow. Requiring very few materials, these are a fun holiday activity and are geometric magic!
When you have finished making your batch of stars, you can hang them just as they are or add the “dip and sparkle” step. Adding this wax dipping step was traditionally used to waterproof the folded star ornaments for decorating outdoors. Even if you don’t plan on hanging them outside, dipping your stars in wax will help preserve the ornaments to reuse for years to come.
All materials provided. Light refreshments will be served.
Event is limited to 20 participants. Advance registration is required.
Admission is free. Beginners are welcome.
Plenty of free parking. Class will be held in the Great Stone Dwelling.
