Take a hike to Smith Pond with UVLT and ESM! Smith Pond Shaker Forest consists of 995 acres of forest and wetlands in Enfield located between two State Wildlife Management Areas. The three properties combine to provide thousands of acres of significant wildlife habitat. UVLT’s property boasts two waterfalls, numerous articles from Shaker History including spillways, dams, canals, and stone walls, and the beautiful Smith Pond.
In the 1830s, the Shakers dammed several ponds, creating “Shaker Mountain Pond,” and developed a system of canals to deliver water to their community near Lake Mascoma that are still visible today
PARKING INFORMATION: Parking can be found at the Smith Pond Trailhead on NH Route 4A
ACCESSIBILITY: This 4.5 mile out-and-back style hike will have about 931ft of elevation change and has some steeper sections. The trail has divots from washouts, roots, and rocks, and is generally labeled as being of “moderate difficulty.”
